I do like Yamaha receivers for quality overall, and this is a good price on this one, but just be sure to know what you're getting.

TheWirecutter does a good job overall, though I get as suspicious of them on rating stuff like this as i do Consumer Reports telling me best cell phone or deck stain.

Costco tsr-7850 I believe shares the cabinet dimensions, front face plate, removable power cord, and power specs with the RX-A780.

YPAO room correction is probably the weak link for Yamaha overall, basically meaning that it can require a lot of manual intervention to configure the speakers to sound good. Many audio enthusiasts don't mind this, but probably not something you want to just give to mom and dad.

This specific model is rated at 90w/2ch/8ohm. This again will be fine for average household, but realize you probably won't be hooking this up to some of the more moderately priced speakers at a super-loud volume without some risk of clipping.

Everything else on this is decent for a basic AVR. If you are willing to put in the time for some of the idiosyncrasies, and you like Yamaha, this price should warrant your consideration.

Sony is expected to announce new models in September, which usually starts the usual competitive stuff on consumer models like this. If youre a few hamburgers short of a picnic, no worries, I'd expect this pricing comes back.

I believe 5.0 is supported.

ETA: It's 4.2 😁

Looks like this was released in April of 2018. Amazon usually discounts this version to $299 if you can wait until BF. I have an older version of this model and it's the lowest model I'd recommend in Yamaha's line. Nice sound, decent build quality, and excellent parametric eq. You can manually set up each speaker with distance and frequency/dB gain. It's like the old 10 band EQs of the 80s and 90s on steroids. A bit slower process, but just as effective. This will drive most 8 ohm 90dB speakers efficiently without overheating, even in 5 or 7 channel stereo mode. Just make sure to set your subwoofer crossover at 80Hz.

It's has more features mostly the rca outs for all channels. If you plan to use powered speakers or external amps it's the way to go. Amazon has this model 6xx series that's almost the same for $280 honestly no difference that you would note otherwise.
