I'm seriously wondering if anyone is making any money on these things. Amazon was practically giving them away after trade in on prime day and now you can basically have them for $35 each.
At this price it is definitely below cost. They are flooding the market with these to gather more data and push their platform. Nice for consumer at the moment but long term they are just spending to kill off competition. Spread the love or you will only have one to chose from. Smilie

Once I have two in my cart, bestbuy.com adds a $10 recycling fee (maybe a California thing), which brings the price to $40/ea. $10 less than the prime day deal, but you have to buy two.

Still haven't received the one I bought on prime day, kept getting backordered since they must have sold a ton. I wonder if they are reconsidering launch price or just trying to make this the new dot.

If it helps, Amazon is sending them out when they get stock. One was delivered to a family member today that had been rescheduled three times. Last year something similar resulted in customer service cancelling orders and sending emails that purported the request was made by the customers. Maybe they listened to Bezos this year.

I bought mine on prime day. Contrary to those saying that this is trash, for $35, you can't ask for more. Speaker is sufficient and screen is plenty bright (you need to mess with the on screen settings if yours is not bright). When you add other dots to it to play in the same room or different rooms, it actually sounds much better. If you demand $100-sound quality, then pair up any Bluetooth speaker (I personally pair it with Bose Revolve occasionally) to a dot or to the show. Most people and the people who have reviewed it (at Best Buy (4.7 stars) and Amazon (4.5 stars) ) won't need more. I've also owned Google Homes which have better sound than the Echo Dots, but Alexa can now connect with Apple Music by default when you ask it to play music if you didn't know.
Agreed.

Listening to my Echo Show 5 right now... it sounds damn decent for such a cheap / small device. It's perfect for smart home usage, to call from one room to another, make announcements, view Ring door bell, wyzecams, control smart home devices (lights / plugs etc).

Those who call it trash are pretty ignorant, imo. This is a steal at $35, even at $50 it was a great price.

I'm shocked Best Buy is willing to take a huge loss to show Amazon that Amazon Prime Day is not the best deal.... to be so brazen at showing up Amazon with a few weeks after Prime Day... is stunning.

They're not really showing up amazon. I paid $15 for a show 5 and smart plug and $25 for the other show 5 from paying attention to slickdeals on prime days and giving them one of my many old dots.

Maybe I'm missing the point of having a Show here but doesn't a Fire tablet have the same capability plus tablet functions? 8" Fire tablets are going for $50 a lot lately. On the tablet, go to settings>Enable Show mode.
I doubt it will be the same as having an Echo.

1. microphone wont' be as good as the echo devices
2. speaker won't be as good either
3. some Alexa commands may not be available. For instance, on my Echo Tap, I can't perform some commands that can be done on Echo show / Echo dot devices, because it's seen as a portable device as opposed to a home device that's always powered on.
4. You can't drop-in on the tablet. I drop in on my kids' echo devices to tell them dinner is ready, we are going out, take out the trash, etc.
5. You can't do announcements on the tablets. Again, we make announcements to the rest of the Echo devices about dinner plans, school homework, etc.
6. From Amazon's page [amazon.com] -
Quote :
Your tablet exits Show Mode automatically if you make Alexa requests that aren't supported in Show Mode.

If you ask Alexa to launch an app, your tablet exits Show Mode and launch the app. You continue to receive App Notifications (if enabled) from your tablet apps while in Show Mode.

If you have Automatic Mode Switching enabled and remove your tablet from the Show Mode Charging Dock, the device exits Show Mode automatically. However, removing your device from the dock doesn't disrupt things like Alexa calls or your flash briefing.
So it seems there are lots of limitations to what it can do compared to the real Echo device.

For instance, when I am in my home office working, and I want to see if someone is in my front door, or if someone opened the garage, I just say "show front door" or "show garage camera" and it shows those views with me having to touch a thing.

On non-Echo devices it may be more cumbersome, or have to swipe screen or mess with tablet to bypass errors / pop-ups etc. Nothing beats hands-free visuals of security cameras, controlling smart home, calling another echo in a far way room. Extremely convenient, and my family uses it all the time.

Did you have to do a trade-in for the show 5? The best deal I saw was limited to 1 per account, $23 for Echo Show 5 with $5 gift card.

How did you get Echo Show 5 and a smart plug for $15? Price mistake?

I don't count price mistakes the same as normal sale price.

The best prime price was $50 on prime day, without trade-in hassle (I got the instant trade-in discount, but it never applied to my order, so I only got it for $45, and have a 25% coupon I need to argue with Amazon with to get some credit hopefully).

Double check that 4 and 5. They enabled drop in on tablets early this year I believe. Also I had to turn on Do not disturb on my kids tablet because of announcements.

But if you have the tablet in kids mode or protected from purchase mode, some Alexa features are disabled.

I mean honestly these things should be free in exchange for all the data they collect. They're basically double dipping.

I totally agree with you. We have had ours since prime day and the speaker is way better than a 1st Gen dot. My parents have the expensive 10" echo show 2 that has a good loud speaker with a bunch of microphones. I just think people are being unrealistic expecting this to hear you well with loud music playing. For that to work well, use the mic to play music to a bigger better speaker a few feet away.

How do you use ibotta to save 10$?
iBotta has a lot of Best Buy rebate offers. There is a specific one for the Echo Show 5. You need to be a member (obviously) and then find the rebate and activate it. You can Join iBotta here [ibotta.com] and then find Best Buy (Find Offers-->Home and Electronics-->Best Buy) and then you have to drill down through the various offers for Best Buy and find the Echo Show 5 one. You will get $10 plus 1% of the purchase and if you are a new iBotta user you can get an extra $10 bonus with your first rebate redemption. So it's possible to get a pretty decent deal...and I love my Echo Show 5's. I also got in on Prime Day action and got a few at $20 to $30 each. Well worth it.
