I love the 4k version as it feels faster to me, but I haven't been able to get any mouse programs to work like they do on the other fire sticks. Anyone get any mouse programs to work on the 4k?
Yes Mouse Toggle 1.06 works for 4K stick the trick is when you open it for first time turn off the top 2 options and click on adb settings wait a few seconds and turn the options back on at the bottom of will say status: starting it supposed to change to started but it never will hit play twice and it will work .

This is probably the best streaming device at this price range. I got it for $15 on Prime Day with trade-in discount though. The remote control is simple but very functional. I have been using it more than the Shield in the past month.
What did you have to do for the trade in?

I have one. The thing I don't like is that it doesn't show which Amazon movies are Prime (free) and which aren't like the Roku does. So when you're surfing around you have to click on each movie to see if it's a rental or free.
Right. Also no apps for fandogonow, Vudu. YouTube app is on now, but check other apps. I don't like hacks for loading apps, may not be safe. it is not like Android phone where Google play store is readily available.

Work with harmony remotes?
It does work with Harmony, but make sure to disable the fire stick's equivalent device control features in the settings or you will have issues.

Edit: I just realized you need to use a newer style Harmony (i.e. a Hub based one), older IR based ones won't work. I use my Elite with it and it works well.

I see a lot of folks pointing out that the YouTube app is there (which is true). It's worth noting that YouTubeTV app is not there yet for those who care (I am not sure if an ETA is announced or if it's not coming).

I have FireTVs (4K and non-4K), Rokus (Ultras and Premiere), and an AppleTV 4K. After trying them all I put Rokus on most of my TVs, due to ease of use and customizability.

As to your specific question, although our family uses Apple devices heavily, I would choose the FireTV over the Apple TV. To me the big advantage of the Apple TV is the ability to scroll past commercials quickly using the trackpad - for that it is much quicker and more precise than FireTV or Roku. Apple TV also let's you use your phone (or Siri) to type, which is handy for entering passwords when you are first setting up apps, but after that I have not used it much. On the downside, if you want to watch an Amazon movie on an Apple TV you have to rent (or buy) the movie in a web browser and then watch it in the Amazon app on Apple TV. Switching to a web browser to rent a movie is a pain.

Balancing everything out the Apple TV may be slightly nicer overall due to the ease of fast forwarding past commercials, but the edge for the Apple TV is very, very slight, and not at all worth the price difference (especially if you want to put the same device on several TVs).

If you use Google Home or Amazon Echo or Apple HomePod or Microsoft Cortana, that also might influence which streaming device you choose, since some smart speakers will have better compatibility with some streaming devices.

No apps that are competitive on Amazon products because they want you to spend money on their movies. No vudu, YouTube TV, fandango now etc

FYI, Volume and Power can be controlled with apple tv remote, if the TV supports HDMI-CEC like anynet+ on samsung. I control volume and power on soundbar and tv with apple remote. It also switches to apple tv input when on a different input, after I press a button on apple tv remote.

Offtopic, but I don't have 4K TV, will Fire TV Stick 4k have better CPU or specs like RAM, etc.?

I have old Fire TV Stick not 4k one

Thanks
Yes better specs and slightly more ram for the extra power needed to run 4K

Sideloading isn't really a 'hack'. If you have an android phone, download Easy Fire Tools from the play store. Using it, you can push apps you installed on your phone to the firestick. That is one od the easiest ways to get play store apps to the firestick.

I had a Roku a few years back and didn't like it. I'm sure the newer ones are much better but I'm currently using a FireTV Stick 1080p but want to upgrade to a 4K unit. The reason I'm contemplating getting an AppleTV 4K unit is because my household has iPhones, iPads and several Macs. Just wondering if it's worth the extra price.
I love the Apple TV 4K. I can use it to airplay my Mac and iPhone and iPad. I can use the iPhone and iPad as remotes. It does Dolby vision and Dolby atmos. It has lots of apps.
