Does not require a port, if you are already a current customer then you can just add a new line and the $55 plan. If you are already a customer, change your current plan to the $55 / mo plan prior to the order. It will make the upfront cost for the $55 plan cheaper when purchasing the phone. (if it's a new 2nd line, you will pay $25 and if it's a new 3rd/4th line, you will pay $10 upfront). Once you receive the phone and activate, you can change your plan back to a lower cost plan immediately so the $55 plan is only pro-rated charges. Total cost for me was $307 and some change: phone @ 274.99, discounted monthly plan price @ $10, plus taxes, free next day shipping.

How does this phone differ from a U1 unlocked version? I have a U1 unlocked S8 right now. Can I load the U1 firmware to this Cricket phone?

Yes you can. I bought two S9s last time Cricket did this, and I checked on XDA for instructions on switching to U1.

Unlock the phone for other carriers? Yes. I went to ebay and purchased an unlock code for around $15 IIRC. If you mean unlock the phone for superuser access, I don't think it's possible to root the S9.

So if I want to upgrade my current phone, can I change my number to this phone, on the $55 plan. Then once it is setup cancel the $55 plan to what I had before? TIA.

this is the same promo they ran a few month ago... do a search and you'll see how easy it is to get the phone and unlock it.

1. eBay - buy a tmobile #
2. port in to cricket
3. wait for phone to arrive
4. eBay to unlock
5. pop in your sim and bam! you're done
6. phone will update to your carrier software or you can try the u1

have fun :-)
