I heard this one wasn't as good as the first two.

That's what I heard too so I set my expectations. Then I got Game Pass, gave it a shot and was very pleasantly surprised. I beat the other two yet had enough fun in this one to 100% it. The only thing I was really disappointed about was performance on the Xbox One X. Lots of screen tearing and FPS dips (especially in the hidden city area) when I don't remember similar issues popping up in the previous games.

It wasn't. I LURVED the 2013 retcon/reboot, but didn't like Rise of the Tomb Raider as much due to the reshuffled skills and need to scavenge resources and occasionally backtrack. However, I liked it more during the 2nd playthru of the 20th Anniversary Edition on PC.

Got Shadow day one and played the hell out of it, beating it in a couple of weeks (25-30 hours, I guesstimate), and while there is much more tomb raiding (good) and some really clever puzzles (needed a walkthru a couple of times because I was obtuse) and it looks amazing, the story was really thin and Lara was kind of an unsympathetic jerk.

There's also a problem with the lost city hub area where 75% of the game seems to be at. Not because everyone speaks English (I get it) or that all the neat costumes you have are off-limits, but because it's supposed to be this LOST CITY yet everyone seems blase that this English chick is running around their place and it seems a lot of people come and go to the outside world. (It's sold as being hidden like Wakanda, but seems too touristy.) The whole end of the world plot is poorly explained even allowing for these games conceits and I was genuinely confused as to what to do in the final boss fight.

Another issue was whereas in other games if you fell attempting a jump or died, you'd either have a short backtrack or your checkpoint would be right before you died. This time around, the checkpoints would be waaaaay back necessitating a lot of traveling to get back to where you got deaded.

One part had you running and jumping around a large machine's perimeter, throwing a lever to start more whirring blades, and then having to backtrack through the death zone to get where you started and then try to advance. If you died on the backtrack, that's right, start from the beginning again. Another battle had an unskippable (albeit brief) cutscene before the fighting started, though that allowed me to stack buffs before triggering the cutscene.

Oh yeah, in a pander to the wokescolds and tubby cosplayers, they chonked her up noticeably. It was bad enough they changed her face for the worse in Rise; now she looked bad for SJW reasons.

While it sounds like I'm dogging the game hard, it's because I so enjoyed the previous ones and the story is comparatively weak. That said, it's well worth $10 and when the Croft/GOTY edition drops under $20 I'm likely to rebuy it for PC to play with my RTX card.

TL;DR: It's not as good as the other two games, but it's got enough positives to make it an instant recommend for under $20 and especially for $10.

I would be all over this at $10 except for 2 problems:
#1. AFAIK only the PC version supports 3D and I like to play my Tomb Raiders in 3D. That means no console versions for me. Now if the PS4 or XONE version supports 3D, someone please correct me.
#2. I think there's a bunch of DLC, so I'd rather wait for a Shadow of the Tomb Raider complete edition around $15 for the PC than jump on the base game for $10.

This is one of those few games that the moment I finally buy it, I will actually play it every weekend in 3D on my 116" projector screen until I finish it. I try to do everything and explore most nooks and crannies looking for tombs and treasures (though in the Uncharted games I skipped some because they were too time consuming to reach), so if 25 hours is the typical completion time, it'll probably take me a little over 30 which means 4-6 weekends getting very little sleep, but that's what the weekends are for.

I read your post, but I don't have ADD like most SDers, so TL;DR doesn't apply to me. I like to read opinions on games I like.

I'll just say that one reason I really like the recent TR games (besides the nice graphics) is the gameplay is really smooth like the Uncharted games or Dead Space (my favorites). Smooth gameplay with a controller and good weapon variety makes a game fun even if it gets tiring killing so many mercenaries. That was my biggest problem with the prior 2 games. It just felt repetitive, not to mention it was too easy to climb mountains (in both TR and Uncharted games)... you had to try hard to fall off and miss. Lara and Nathan can both climb mountains with picks or their bare hands in their sleep or they can fall down cliffs or 50 feet off a ledge and survive, while I would miss and die on my first jump or fall if I ever tried it (I never would).

Awesome game. Better than uncharted. Don't think twice, just get it if you haven't played it.

Be careful with gamefly. I bought a used game from them. I didn't bother to play it for about 3 months. I went to put the game in my PS4 and it wouldn't load because it was scratched. I couldn't return it because it had been more than a month.

I would rather call uncharted as a lite version of tomb raider. Tomb raider is more brutal and challenging.

There is no 3D on the consoles, and I agree - the first of this trilogy, at least (it's the only one I've played) is amazing in 3D. 3D hardware is dying out, but I still play everything I can in 3D on my PC. It's a shame because the community support for Nvidia 3D Vision is better than ever (even if Nvidia and most game developers couldn't care less because the customer base is so small); if you haven't already, install 3D Fix Manager!: https://helixmod.blogspot.com/201...nager.html

On a related note, I was disappointed in the XBOX PC Game Pass I got recently because Windows locks down that WindowsApps folder the games install to and nothing has write access, so no 3D patches will work. So I only care about those games I couldn't play in 3D on PC otherwise anyways, like Forza Horizon 4 or Gears of War 4.
