With the DW735 currently at $450, this is no good.

It's miiiiiiiiiiles better than this basic planer.

Biggest difference is the number of cuts (97 & 179) with finishing mode for smoother cuts, 20k rpm motor even though the head is only 10k rpm. You have the ability to upgrade to better heads. I would skip the DW735 and instead go for the DW735X for $449 with feed ramps.

This is indeed inferior to the 735x, and I would spend the extra $100 on the 735x. Doubly so if you ever want to move to a Helix cutter head. Personally, I sand everything I plane, so that's unnecessary.

However, if you're hooking up a dust collector, the chip ejector on this isn't terribly useful. I can't ever see needing two speeds for planing, as the 734's single speed is adequate for everything I've done. My 734 came with feed ramps on both sides, so that one's a wash too.

I dropped an 80 lb electric motor on top of this thing and didn't even knock it out of alignment. If you absolutely have to save $100, this is still a very good planer.
