The info I share below may let Staples customers save a lot of money, or at least not lose money without awareness. I am not sure if other people had the same experience (hopefully not).

I had Staples premier membership (black card) for years, because I spent over $1000 per year. Now I'm a plus member.

In the last few months, things became weird. Or it was always weird but I just didn't know. Shortly speaking, the actual amount charged by Staples.com is different from the amount in cart, email confirmation and order history (they all have the same amount). I believe those mistakes were not accidents, because it happened EVERY TIME. But I don't think Staples intended to do that either. Firstly Staples is a big company. More importantly, just see how many ridiculous bugs on its website, no surprise it will also have payment issues.

You may check your order history to see if you have the same problem. Here is an example (just an example):
Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, Lemon and Lime Blossom, 80/Canister, 4/Pack [staples.com]

On the website, there are three different prices:
- Regular Price $15.69

You never want to buy regular price item at Staples, like the Apple TV, which is $30 more expensive than Apple.com MSRP or some grocery stuffs 50% more expensive than Walmart or Target.

- Actual price: $14.69 (after $1.00 Member Savings)

This is the actual price when you add the item into cart. I don't think the "Member Savings" came from 'plus membership', because it shows this price even in guest page.

- "Custom pick price" in Plus member custom pick page: $11.51.

Each Staples Plus Member can pick 5 items as the "Custom Pick", which offers even lower price than "Member Savings".

After purchasing this item on Staples.com, Staples sends an confirmation email saying I am charged $11.51 (if it is one of my five custom picks) or $14.69 (if it is not my custom pick). However, the price actually charged from my gift card was $15.69.

How did I know that? I didn't know it until my gift card happened to have a balance less than the regular price but more than the cart/receipt price. The order was placed successfully, because my gift card has more balance that the cart price. But the actual transaction was failed and the order became on hold, because Staples tried to charge the regular price.

I don't know how many times the same thing happened during these years, because:
- I always use gift card at Staples (blame those gift card deals).
- Gift card has no transaction record. I would never know how much they charged if I don't compare the balance before and after a payment.
- If my gift card doesn't have enough balance, I will apply the 2nd gift card. The 2nd card will cover the hidden extra charge.

Anyway, I am lucky (or not) to realize this problem, and tried to repeat it. I triggered the problem EVERY time.

I called Staples about those orders on hold, due to failed transactions. The representative (nice to speak with) at beginning always tells me my gift card doesn't have enough balance. Then I asked why and how much is the item, they always give me the regular price. When I remind them the 'member saving' price, they can never find that in the system. If I tell them the 'custom pick' price, they cannot confirm it before an "investigation" for minutes but have to adjust the price manually.

What if I didn't call and have enough balance on the card? How long this problem has been lasting? How many of my orders had this problem? How much extra money I had spent?

The same issue happened on some good deals limited 2 per customer with 5 digits public coupon. Staples charged original price instead of the deal price. The good thing is, at least the "limited 2 per customer" still works LMAO

Anyway, I don't want to waste my time and money any more at Staples. The only thing I wish to do is to use all my rewards and gift card and say bye-bye to Staples.com as quickly as possible. Why not to sell the gift card to online resellers? That is a good question. Applause Because sometimes Staples gift card will become unavailable to use due to "technical issue" for days or months. I don't want card buyers to question my honesty.

Thanks for your time. It would be very helpful if you could share your experience. At least let me know if that is the problem only for my account.

It wouldn't surprise me at all due to the number of bugs. I'll be sure to check, however. The last order I placed was correct. I made sure to check because I had a coupon that required chat to apply. However, I usually go in-store at staples because I tend to only pay with ink rewards. Online requires you to spend extra money and in-store gives you the balance coupon, which I usually get under a dime.

If it happens often, it's a lawsuit or some other legal matter.

Oh -- and FYI, staples price matches, including Amazon and walmart. So you can usually get any item at a reasonable price.

I always track exactly the purchases made on my Staples GCs, both e and plastic. Other than the system-wide GC meltdown they had a year or so ago, I have always found the $$ to be exactly correct.

So I would expect the problem you're having to be in the special pricing aspect of it rather than being a GC issue.

I have had issues over the years with staples.com with weird stuff happening with sales tax - where the total on the initial order confirmation does not match the actual. Small discrepancy, and I don't worry about it. It is due to the socialist taxation systems here in the Democratic Peoples Republic of California. The state will have about a 7.5% tax rate, which Staples knows about and charges up front. But then the city/county/??? will also grab whatever they can get on top of that (about 2% more), which Staples usually will add at a later point in the financial transaction process. No problems like this in-store, of course.

Yes. If the item only has original price, there won't be any problem. It only happened when it has a discount price or in custom picks. When shopping in store, no problem at all.

what burns me up is the custom picks. it says: Choose 5 custom picks and we'll beat any competitor price, guaranteed. How? We price check daily.
So you don't have to

this item is one of my picks: https://www.staples.com/Glad-Draw...uct_482998
and i found it about $8 cheaper somewhere else. I sent them the link, they said go to store. But it says they price check daily, so i don't have to.

If somewhere else is a big store, it's usually checked. If it's crazy Al's discount barn, no.

I'm pretty sure price matching to warehouse stores is a no go with them. And most other places. Warehouse stores are their own beast.

Another issue with the custom picks - the discounted prices don't last for any specified time. For example, if you see an item you like and expect to buy a few times, with a regular price of $50 and a custom picks price of $40, and you select that pick. You lock in that pick for 90 days - you can't change it to a different item, but they can change the price any time they want, including back up to full price. So your custom pick will be giving you literally zero discount.

So what I do is to only make the custom picks when I'm about to actually buy the item. You don't actually ever need to have all 5 picks filled.

Also, just yesterday, I noticed this one - the "member discounted pricing" or whatever it is - the Plus member discount but not a custom pick - was actually lower priced than the custom pick value. Only by a few pennies, but it meant I did not bother to select that custom pick before buying it.
