Season one is a little rough around the edges (as is typical of a lot of sci fi shows, and understandable for one mixing in humor in a new way like this), but worth watching. Season 2 was excellent. It really has just become a light hearted extension of Star Trek TNG, and that's not a bad thing at all.

And these comments complaining about "social commentary" seem strange, as sci fi has always primarily been about using non-existent technology and species to tell stories that make us examine ourselves and our own world. That's the nature of the genre. I mean there are certainly fans who get into long technical arguments about how the propulsion systems work in-universe, etc, but I think that's a little beside the point, and if that were the entire show it would be pretty terrible.

Great show. As time went on the humor was dialed back quite a bit. Most Sci Fi shows deal with social issues. Typically when someone says they don't appreciate the social commentary; it just means it didn't align with their thoughts on how society should be. No problem there. If they don't like it, they won't watch it. No loss whatever. What's more amusing is even though they don't watch it, they feel the need to complain about it. That says to me the show works. :-)

It's not overwhelming compared to the rest of the crap on TV nowadays. It's emulating Star Trek TNG and if you go back and watch that show, it had some socal commentary for the time, too.

At first I found the comedic scenes to be a little out of place, but the humor has found its place a little better in Season 2. Like many shows, the first season is mostly getting a feel for the pace/characters.

Great show if you're a TNG fan and at least passively enjoy Seth MacFarlane's type of humor. Just like TNG it manages to tell some epic stories in a single episode and pulls off serious scenes well too.

Not even for free, could have been great but it "progressively" got worse over the course of the first season, I haven't returned.

Love this series, and what a world we live in where the best Star-trek style sci-fi is coming from Seth MacFarlane and not the writer of the modern Star Trek incarnations.

It'll be interesting to see if the humor stays as-is given it will be on Hulu and not designed for traditional TV broadcast. I admit the humor does feel shoehorned in at times, and it honestly probably is due to the exec trying to force more humor into the show to try for a wider audience than it will probably ever have (which the comments here seem to confirm).

Season 3 is confirmed but it will be moved from Fox to Hulu and is expected to begin airing late 2020.

IMO I am ok with the mix of humor and seriousness although I think they went way too heavy on "relationships" in the show. Almost every episode revolves around two or more of the crew member's love lives. Ed and Kelly's relationship was touched on in nearly half the episodes through both seasons.

Fun fact: In real life Scott Grimes (Gordon Malloy) and Adrianne Palicki (Kelly Grayson) got married in May 2019 and filed for divorce in July 2019.
