I bought the Asus walmart deal. That keyboard cycles colors. I will see if that is sufficient for her.

I have this laptop. Comparing firestrike/timespy graphics scores the 60w 1660ti max q is a tiny bit faster than the desktop 1060/580 and a hair slower than the mobile 1070.

The display panel is very dim even at 100% brightness.

That being said Dells are super easy to upgrade.

For a college student who does PC gaming (not anything that's too graphic-intensive) is this Dell a better buy than this Asus at Best Buy:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus...Id=6335589

The Dell has a better graphics card 1660Ti vs 1650, but the Asus has a better processor i7 vs i5?

Would definitely appreciate your opinion (or anyone's opinion) as I have 1 more day before the return period ends on the Asus. Thanks in advance!

You can directly buy a Type-C to DisplayPort Adapter or HDMi Adapter, depending upon the Input port in your monitor.

i dont like that asus because it is 10 keyless. i use the 10 key all the time. but that may not be a big deal for others.
otherwise... g531g(my results)

g3 3590(my results)
https://www.3dmark.com/fs/19865083

the 1660ti max q is significantly faster than the 1650, while the 9750h is significantly faster than the 9300h. for gaming only?.... the 9300h 1660ti is much more balanced. for productivity(adobe suite/blender) the 9750h is much better and the 1650 wont have issues with games like csgo, overwatch, rocket league, etc. the 1650 will start to struggle in games like the witcher 3, assassins creed odyssey, tomb raider, etc. if you think you will be playing aaa games, take the cpu hit and get the 1660ti. if you are only going to play esport games or other games on medium/low settings, just keep the asus 9750h 1650.

my older 7700hq 1050ti did well in games, and the 1650 is a decent bit better than the 1050ti.

Thanks for all of the info. This is for my son who starts college in 2 weeks. Since he doesn't play a lot of FPS (more strategy and stuff like that) I guess it would make more sense to keep the ASUS since it has the i7 processor vs. the i5 that comes with the Dell. Guess I was thinking of getting the Dell "in case" he decides he wants to play higher end games. If he's not doing that then it makes sense to keep the Asus like you said. Appreciate it sir.

If your son is smart with game settings he can still definitely play aaa games on the 1650. You dont have to max out ultra high settings to enjoy a game. The ps4 pro or xbox x are roughly equal to the rx570(desktop)and rx580 respectively. Where the original PS4 or Xbox one are closer to the 1050ti. The 1650 sits comfortably between the 1050ti and rx570. So he shouldn't have a problem dialing in roughly console like settings in games.

This doesn't seem like a slick deal. I know the Lenovo y545 has some bad reviews but it has an i7 9750h 16gb 128ssd 1tb hd 1660ti for same price plus you get about $48 back in Rakuten. I just bought one so I'll have to see how it ultimately performs but it seems to be way better spec wise.

Excellent. Thanks so much. I feel better about the purchase now, so I guess I will keep the Asus with the i7 processor.

I definitely appreciate all of your insight!

This is a G3, the cooling on it is much worse compared to the higher end models. In a gaming laptop, this is going to be a big factor since thermal throttling is going to make any gaming session impossible. Specs aren't everything.
