The soundtrack was good, that was about it.
I remember thinking the Puff Daddy song "Come with me" was better than Kashmir, which borrowed a riff.
I was young and I knew not what I was doing.

I think much of the hate for the 1998 one is that the design of Godzilla did not look or behave like the traditional Gojira/Godzilla--it was more like a giant raptor/lizard running around the city. I remember seeing the movie when I was in middle school. It was epic at the time. However, looking back at the movie after getting into the original Godzilla movies, I can see why people don't like it.
Exactly. In my opinion, that's fair hate. It did not look, behave or dominate like Godzilla. It also died easily and early. To paraphrase the duck test [wikipedia.org], if the monster doesn't look like Godzilla, doesn't walk like Godzilla (sprinting? really?) and doesn't roar like Godzilla, it's not Godzilla. Hollywood misled Godzilla fans into watching it by marketing it as Godzilla when it was not.

If Roland Emmerich & Co. called the movie something else entirely, I would have said it was a decent movie (dunno about "epic"). But as a "Godzilla" movie, it is NOT Godzilla....and so as a so-called "Godzilla" movie, it is trash.

The only good thing about the 1998 movie is that they leveled MSG at the end.

Unfortunately, the Japanese are stuck with him. The National Kaiju Association is a very powerful lobby.

Since you showed such bravery, in admitting how you thought the Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page song was pretty bad ass, I have to admit my error of judgement as well and admit I thought "Come With Me," was dope!

As a noob to the Japanese Godzilla films, what would you veterans recommend as the best one or two to buy to start with?

I remember there's a scene in the movie with the mayor of New York and his browbeaten aide. They named the mayor Ebert and his aide was named Gene. I thought: "What the heck is this crap?" Of course they get stomped on. I hate the movie.

Godzilla Final Wars, Godzilla vs Destoroyah, & Shin Godzilla (although I don't think this last one is part of this deal).
