Yes, people still use TiVos, and yes, it's better than your DVR.

I was always hopeful Microsoft was going to make the Xbox One a DVR, but I think they saw too many issues with storage space limitations eating into online game sales.

I just hope HD TV signals continue to get stronger as cord cutters revert back to OTA like I have...

Screw TiVo. Called to verify a tsn was lifetime, twice before ordering a used unit from eBay. Got it, called to activate and they said sorry it's a monthly unit. They even had the conversation and refused to honor it. Never again.
I had a similar experience. They refused to activate my verified lifetime TiVo and wanted me to pay over $300 for a lifetime subscription my unit already came with.

Why the big difference in the all in service plans?
I believe it's because you're paying for the guide to be updated. For cable, that means an accurate guide for hundreds of channels on hundreds of providers. For OTA, not so much.

Well, then if that's the case, I want my money back. Because their accuracy is laughable at best. Hehehe.

I have to think the Recast is becoming a serious competitor to the OTA Tivos. The free 14 day guide is a big factor, plus the cheaper initial cost.

BTW, Best Buy currently has the 2-tuner Recast for $129 ($100 off) and the 4-tuner for $179 ($100 off).
The Recast seems pretty good, especially for a first generation product. Hoping the next one allows for more than 2 playback devices at a time.

You can still get decent money if it will do OTA. Cable only Tivo prices have dropped like a rock.
Cable only Tivo prices have dropped like a rock? how much?

can they be used with a OTA tuner box??

Will this work with IPTV? I'm paying $10/month which access all VOD/PPV/HBO etc and live movies in the theater, not sure if this TiVo can record those.

The ebay seller was good about it and I sent back for a refund, it just amazed me that they were not willing to own up to their mistake. Escalation told me they'd call back with some kind of concession, but he said it would not be lifetime activation. Oh well, HDHomeRUN and Plex work just fine.
Wait a second? Their mistake? What about the eBay seller's?

I agree! My onepass is recording multiples of half the shows we watch because their guide is often showing incorrect information and mixing up what show/episode is what.

That's odd. I've done it twice with two units purchased years apart on eBay and TiVo's customer service actually exceeded my expectations and got them both transferred with instructions quickly. I happened to mention that one of the remotes I bought used on eBay had the lettering worn down and they shipped me a replacement remote for free. I tossed out the 500GB and installed a 3TB Red I had floating around and mine's been solid as a rock for about 4-5 years now.

Although the simplicity of the Recast is tempting, think I'll stick with my Roamio for OTA DVR and an AppleTV 4 for whatever streaming I want to do.

Fire tv recast and a fire stick. Way cheaper and much easier to use.
Not quite as reliable as tivo, but definately way better for combining OTA with other streaming services

I just switched from Tivo Roamio OTA to Recast/FireTV. Honestly their disappointing marketing email that the OP posted (showed up a few days ago in my inbox) prompted me to see what other deals might be out there, which made me aware of Amazon Recast (not well advertised).

Very happy with the new interface, spouse and other users pleased as well. Not quite as smooth as Tivo for OTA television watching, but significantly better UI otherwise and better integration with streaming services.

No real complaints other than 'surfing' between OTA channels has a slightly larger delay but barely noticeable and given we rarely sit there and channel surf anymore, is a non-issue.
But it only works with Amazon Fire devices right? No Apple TV or Roku app?

Tivo cable can also be used for OTA. Just use an antennae with a coax-cable connector, which is how most new antennas already come from the manufacturer.
A Tivo OTA unit is the same unit as a regular Tivo, except that it does not have a slot for a cable card.
I've been OTA for over 12 years using regular Tivos and they work perfectly.
