You can still get decent money if it will do OTA. Cable only Tivo prices have dropped like a rock.
Comcrap ended TiVo legacy xfinity streaming support in June so I'm betting that has something to do with it.
About 2 yrs ago I got a new OTA roamio with lifetime for less than $200, then grabbed pin out for $15 on "the bay" and added my comcrap cable card.
I've been golden ever since!
Lots of folks knock TiVo but if you ever use an X1 box it's like stepping back 20 yrs... slow... not intuitive...frustrating.
PROTIP: Those getting Roamio avoid the "new user interface" download. IMO cripples usability of roamio and older boxes. Menus on older interface aren't "pretty" but are fast and 99% rock-solid reliable.

Are you saying you can convert an OTA Roamio to cable?

Yeah my Roamio is on the newer Hydra interface... I liked the old one better too

Edit: That's pretty sweet. Sounds like ppl were doing what you did... buy a cheap Roamio OTA with lifetime and adding in their card for huge savings

Roamio ota died on me. Most likely a hard drive failure and the fix is not simple. Bought the Amazon recast for 120 on prime day. Cheaper than wasting time and money on a new drive. All the sticks can now stream tv so it's very convenient. Interface could be a little bettter but not bad at all. You can even stream to your phones.

Best of all no need to subscribe or buy lifetime service. Good riddance Tivo.

Very casual TV watcher. I'm tempted to cash out my entire TiVo system and go for the recast as prices drop. I love the TiVo but so rarely use it, can fetch good money and go for one of these cheap Amazon boxes. Only concern is if it has their nasty spyware microphones embedded, not a fan.
Be aware that amazon reduces the resolution to 720p even if you get 1080i on your local stations. Streaming will go at full resolution though. For me I have to restart my Fire TV Stick 4k every other day or it's sooooo slow. Tivo has been flawless for me and their quickmode now being customizable from 10 to 90% faster is really helpful. Tivo just works, and I don't have to explain how to use it to any visitors to my house. Also when watching a recorded broadcast station it doesn't slow my wifi down as the Recast could.

Yes. You can google for instructions. All you have to do is buy a tray from eBay. There is also lots of info on this in previous threads.

You can revert to the old interface but you will lose all recordings.

What is a pin out?
Pin out, cable card tray, cable card adapter.... Google around using those terms and "tivo ota" and you'll see what I mean.
Been a couple yrs so don't know exact terms.

Tivo cable can also be used for OTA. Just use an antennae with a coax-cable connector, which is how most new antennas already come from the manufacturer.
A Tivo OTA unit is the same unit as a regular Tivo, except that it does not have a slot for a cable card.
I've been OTA for over 12 years using regular Tivos and they work perfectly.

TiVo Premiere/HD still work w/ OTA (if lifetime activated)??. Seeing some deals online but I know Tivo stopped activating the old units.

Ever since Rovi bought them, their service has been horrible. It is the smoothest DVR out, but incorrect guide and channel lineups fall on deaf ears with them. Bugs that are years old have never been fixed. Went with Tablo and getting rid of my Roamios.

Screw TiVo. Called to verify a tsn was lifetime, twice before ordering a used unit from eBay. Got it, called to activate and they said sorry it's a monthly unit. They even had the conversation and refused to honor it. Never again.
How is that TiVo's fault... Sounds like the sellers fault.

Fire tv recast and a fire stick. Way cheaper and much easier to use.
I just did this and it works great

Those of you who are comparing this to Recast needs to know that there is no match. Tivo is way superior than recast and I hate that f**king Fire TV.
