Is this basically an off-brand Evo 212?

But unless it's a pure copper block, will it be any better than the ryzen 3900x vaper chill cooler?

If your looking for an upgrade for the 3900x, i'd look at a Cryorig H7 or Noctua NH-U12S. I've got a few of these gammax coolers, great for up to 100 watts TDP but any higher and i'd use one of the above or a 240mm AIO.

So I almost bit on the Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED deal yesterday but then fell down a deep rabbit hole of unnecessary research.

The only real difference between the 212 LED and 212 Evo is the surface that mates with the CPU. The 212 LED has copper pipe surface and aluminum heat sink material alternating while the 212 Evo has all copper pipe.

Further research, and because I didn't want to deal with rebates, lead me to the DEEPCOOL Gammaxx 400 which is that same price on Amazon as this Newegg deal.
It's basically exactly the same as the 212 LED (not Evo) for a slightly lower price without any rebate hassles. And it's been a very well reviewed and highly rated cooler for years. Rated as being both very quiet and very efficient at cooling, even modern Ryzen chips that have been OCd.

Hope my lack of useful productivity benefits someones decision.

From a Tom's Hardware thread:
The materials in the surface that mate with the CPU are very important in regards to the ryzen 3000 gen, as their chiplets inside, are on on tiny area under the integrated heatsink. Having a pure copper contact will ensure that more heat is transferred from those areas, rather than having some aluminium there, with less heat conductivity.
Nevertheless, the coolmax seems like a good deal. And by now all pc DC motor fans should be brushless, so I doubt that the fan will burn out within two years.

No backplate mount for intel, its the basic pushpin type. I'd prefer the CM.

i have this for my 2700x, avoid this cooler.
quiet but it's barely an upgrade from the standard cooler.
2700x couldn't boost or OC at all with this weak cooler.

are you using it right? I don't remember the 2700x having issues with boost on it's stock cooler

anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong and that cpu had heat issues it's cooler couldn't handle.

The 2700X should be able to boost even on its stock cooler as the stock cooler (Wraith Prism) is pretty good. If this Gammax Cooler is even a small improvement over the stock and your 2700X cpu still can't boost, then you might have problems with your CPU or installation.

From a Tom's Hardware thread:
I've had very bad experiences with a Cooler Master non-continuous direct contact heatpipe cooler in the past where the thermal paste wouldn't spread properly beyond the heatpipe as the aluminum parts created large gaps.
