Had a lot of stuff done by Shutterfly over the years, and yes - trying to maximize the deal can be very confusing.

"Offer is good for one free 20-standard page 8x8 hard photo cover book through shutterfly.com, our mobile-friendly site or Shutterfly app. Not valid on 6x6 or 7x9 photo books, soft cover books, personalized story books, flush mount albums, Groovebook, yearbook orders, prepaid plans, other products and prior purchases. Customers may apply the current price of a 20-standard page 8x8 hard photo cover book (after taking into account any current discounts on shutterfly.com) toward the purchase of a larger photo book. Other cover types, additional pages, Storytelling™ styles, etc may be added to the current book for an additional fee. Offer cannot be combined with other code-based $-off offers. Free offers cannot be combined with free shipping. Promo can only be redeemed once per account and/or billing address. This offer code can only be entered once. Taxes, shipping and handling may apply. "

The way I see this, is an 8x8 standard, hard cover photo book with no special formatting or add-ons for $8 shipped.

If that's okay with you, then it's a good deal. I've seen a number of ways to get a "free" 8x8 Shutterfly book for $8 shipping (bottle caps, Best Buy 'freebie', etc.
Apply the code to a larger sized book, then the whole formula changes. As long as that's what you really want, cool.

Can you occasionally get an 8x11 book at other vendors for the sane deal? Yes. But ...(past threads elaborate upon this), you do get what you pay for.

Shutterfly's been very good and consistent for me. Have I had 8x8 books made for this $8 deal? Yes...for my grandkids. For others, I make larger format books.
As a kick, you can design a personalized book for a child with photos, graphics and a storyline. What child isn't thrilled with a story centered around them? 😊

I love my SD family 😊

Thanks OP. I made one for Xmas photos.

To avoid the numerous upsells :
start with an 8x8 photo book
filter for just 'standard styles' and chose one of those (think theres 6 choices)
choose 'standard pages'
make the photo book and make sure to stick to the 20 pages
decline the half dozen or so upsell options when adding to the card
choose 'economy' shipping option

I'm sure others are better at this, but I get so frustrated putting together stuff on shutterfly as it seems really difficult to get the price/free that they say (they add various things which make it more expensive). Just my experience.

Agreed. The $8 shipped is literally slapping photos to a page with nothing special; after that though, you're into extra cost territory.

That being said, if you have about 2 hours of time, you can make a cute little book on the cheap. I make these all of the time for my wife.

Thanks OP. Put together a little no-frills book with 60 photos. Easier to look through then just printing out pics.

Any code for unlimited pages? Last time I made as shutterfly book , found a "unlimited pages" deal (which in reality I think is 99 pages), and filled it up. With a free book code an upsell for cover images, I think it came to about $19 or something. Great deal!

Yea, Shutterfly is usually pretty good at limiting your stacking abilities. I make an 8x8 for Valentine's Day every year as a year in review book. To help mitigate pricing, I purchase a code on eBay for a couple bucks and wait for an unlimited pages deal. That way I'm paying shipping plus the code. Sometimes the code includes the add on storybook pages, sometimes not so YMMV. So all in for me with this strategy it's like $10-$15. I'm fine paying that.
