what would be needed to spend $$ to get this moving faster? 4gb mem? etc? Anyone have an idea as to how much these "upgrades" would cost? looks like it has 2 mem slots? Anyone who got in on this last time confirm this and how is this cheapo laptop?

Even with the hassle of the rebate, this laptop at net $210 seems like an outrageous deal, I was going to get the aspire 5 on amazon now at $309 and just drop more ram and a 1tb nvme drive in, is there any reason not to get this dell instead?

Biggest difference is the display - that Aspire 5 has an IPS display, way better color and viewing angles. Dell is also 1080p but it's still TN. Huge difference.

Acer's Ryzen processor performs better (not a huge difference in normal use) and better graphics performance. Not for heavy gaming, but ok for light gaming.

Acer is also better-built (aluminum lid) and slimmer and about half a pound lighter.

Unless on very tight budget or you will only use this with external monitor, go with the Acer.

Awesome thanks for the help! As a follow-up I was also considering the Asus vivobook at Costco deal (which I think is ips), but was still thinking the Acer because it had nvme, which seems like it's much faster. Does nvme make a large real world difference?

NVME looks amazing on benchmarks, 3x to 5x the speed of SATA, but in real-world usage you can't tell the difference (except when copying large files). The Asus in the Costco deal is a quad-core CPU, so that's quite a bit faster than this Dell and the Acer (but again, in real world use it's not necessarily a huge difference).

I think it comes down to whether you prefer a 14- or 15.6-inch. Big difference in footprint.

Great, I'll probably go with the Costco Asus after all that. Thanks again.

FYI, I just bought this laptop at @325 two weeks ago... the $100 Visa Gift Card process wasn't terrible, however my laptop shipped on 8/9 and I got an email today (8/21) prompting me to apply for the Visa Gift Card, and that applications must be submitted "30 days from the shipping date". Meaning 12 of my 30 days to submit were spent unsure what to do. Also, you have to screen shot the "Your Item has Shipped" email so don't delete that email.

My $0.02, once you receive the laptop, go ahead and go to https://dellgiftcardpromo.com/ and follow the steps to submit, don't wait on the email to prompt you to do so.
