Bummer that you got a defective unit. The one I got on prime day has been running cool and quiet even under continuous load 24/7 folding@home.

Acer does seem to have inconsistency with their laptops. I returned a Helios 300 last year due to screeching fan noise. Even at idle, the fan would make irritating noise. Their cooling system paste/mount also seems inconsistent with Helios users either reporting cool running over bad overheating.

Basically, my personal experience with Acer laptops is that they either crap out in first month or run until they are obsolete.

Bought this exact model from the Prime day sale for the same price.
The GPU died within a week. Had annoying screeching fan sounds too. Shame, because I had 2 Predator laptops (with Nvidia) prior to that, and they were awesome.

You can get a hp omen with rtx 2070 for about the same price paired with i7 9xxx, granted the desktop grade cpu is more powerful and cooling is probably better with this, but man, im not sure if i want to be seen with this in a business meeting
You won't find a laptop with better cooling than this one. It's ridiculous

Thanks for info.

I read that HyperX 2666mhz sodimms may require xmp to run higher than 2400 and most laptop bios do not support xmp.

I heard micron 2666mhz sodimms have spd set to 2666mhz so should work without xmp support.

It's a pain, if I had to do it all over again I would took it to micro center and paid them to do it.

This is what was in it:
SK Hynix 16GB (2X8GB) 1RX8 PC4-2400T DDR4

I sold them on Ebay for $50

Windows will CPUid say it's running at 2400 but they may be a windows issue. Haven't had time to dig into it.

There should be a different category for "laptop" when it passes 7-8 lbs. Perhaps "briefcase".

I don't have this, but I have an Acer Nitro 5 and it looks similar to this, but smaller. Which is crazy because the Nitro 5 is a "briefcase", it is huge and unwieldy. And this thing is even bigger and heavier.

I hope they fixed the touchpad from the Nitro series where the entire pad physically "clicks", like when trying to right click. I hate it and hope it hasn't spawned into other models.

I also hope that for double plus the money they fixed the cooling fans... they get really busy/loud on the Nitro. On another thread I was told undervolting might help, but I don't think that applies to Ryzen models.

Long story short... it's a desktop replacement. If you need a road warrior travel companion, this likely isn't the droid you are looking for.

edit - I'm going to +1 this deal because I looked on ebay and it actually costs more as a refurbished model. So this is a good price for this monster.

Only for your back lugging it around. Seriously, this thing is only portable compared to a desktop. Get a roller bag if you want a mobile workstation.

Nobody should try to use a nearly 10lb system on their lap unless they are trying to induce deep vein thrombosis.

The touchpad has separate buttons so pad itself is solid...which I prefer. I hate rattling touchpads as I typically do taps instead of clicking buttons.

The cooling fans on this thing is quietest I have ever heard in any laptop when under long duration full load on cpu and gpu. I actually think it is quieter than most of my desktops under full load.

I have not seen a single instance of thermal throttling of gpu or cpu running stock speeds. Vega 56 is surprisingly cool at 120watt cap. It runs between 1215mhz to 1300mhz in folding@home and maxes 75c hotspot. The Ryzen 2700 maxes 87c at 3300mhz at prolonged full 16 thread loads. And this is at above 29c temperatures. I have not tried much in way of overclocking yet.

My favorite model was their 2017 17 inch unit with 1060. The rubberized case was orgasmic to touch. I miss that machine dearly--it was my all-time favorite, very solid build and performance. This one felt way cheaper, even though it had way more premium components. Are their Nvidia models still rubberized?

It seems like 2018 and 2019 models have gone toward more metal.

I bought this last time it went for $1299 as well, and I have liked it so far. I have an issue with FPS drops sometimes, but I fix those by manually updating my Radeon Settings. I just ran 3DMark Demo's Time Spy without any overclock and got a score of 5715. Even though its huge and heavy, it's made a wonderful replacement for my 6 year old PC.

Yeah, this one feels just as solid as my full metal gaming laptops. Plastic seems to pick up my fingerprints less than the dark metal of other laptops.

It really doesn't seem that heavy. The power supply is huge though.
