There aren't many knives on the planet that compare to a Wusthof Classic. You get what you pay for and, IMO, it's worth every penny at full retail price. You can pass this knife down to the grandkids.

Mercer and Victorinox make solid every-day knives. I have all three brands (as chef knives, utility, sliders, etc). I use the cheaper two as daily knives and the Wusthof for special occasions.

I wouldn't call either the Mercer or the Vicorinox "as good" as the Wusthof however. The weight, the handle, and steel are superior on the Classic line.

YES, there ARE a LOT of counterfeit Wusthof.

I'd tather pay 5 dollars (when on sale from a REPUTBLE dealer) more and know for sure it is real

Seller seems to have lots of good reviews. Are there a lot of fakes on these?

I'd be concerned about fakes for these type of items unless you're a knife expert.

Yeah I like the Wusthof. It's my everyday knife. I actually just bought another one because I gave my original one away. I think I paid $88 like 2 weeks ago on ebay. This one is definetly the "work horse" in my kitchen...then my special occasion knives are the Miyabi Birchwoods

Agree, this knife is very good and worth the premium.

That being said, your whole set doesn't need to be this brand, probably just your chefs knife and your pairing knife

The Mercer that achifari and itdepends mentioned is great! Used by tens of thousands of working cooks and chefs and is part of one of the student kit choices on almost every culinary schools worldwide.

genesis is a virtual clone of the Grand Prix2 and the Rennasance is a clone of the Classic and it from a super manufacturer.

And don't forget tojiro DP and Yaxell Mon

I think even more important than the brand of knife is the importance of sharpening. I have a friend with a $$$ set of Shun knives he got for his wedding 10+ years ago. Never sharpened. What a waste.

Wet stones can be intimidating and are prone to user error which turns off some. My favorite sharpening device is the WorkSharp tool. Dead simple to use and it gets knives sharper than hand sharpening (citation available upon request).

Rereading this post, it sounds like an ad! I just really like the sharpener.

As for cheap vs expensive chef knives, IMHO I like the thinness of the Vic and Mercer.

As far as these deals on Slickdeals go, I don't know if I can justify kitchen knives for $85 with the family. We've been using the same sears knives for the last 23 years.
