Looks like a good deal for an SSD with 5 year warranty.

https://www.microcenter.com/produ...-s-25-quot

Specs from intel site.

https://www.intel.com/content/www...s-3d2.html

Some of the specs on the the microcenter website looks incorrect. Endurance is 144TBW (vs 72 on microcenter specs) and read speed is 550MBps.

With 5 year warranty and $1 more than their inland drive, this looks like a good deal to speed up an old laptop.

Why? A 256G thumb drive, comes with enclosure for same price as this drive without the enclosure. If for family pics, you do not need SSD speed. Grab a 2TB external for $30 (256Gx8).
Speed and form factor and ability to upgrade I/O

Speed will be pretty much the same. You're limiting factor is the USB interface, not the SATA speed. USB HDD for the same price for way more storage space.

Again, if stated for family pics. You can also look into online solutions. Google gives you a ton for free with your Gmail account.

Nice deal. Taking enclosure recommendations. Would be nice as cold storage for family photos or backups.
Just get 256 gb flash drive.

How does this compare to the Samsung evo SSD? Looking to replace the HDD in my 12' MacBook Pro.
In terms of speed, the Intel ones slightly lag behind Samsung offerings - but you won't notice this with everyday use - only when you are transferring large files. I also like using the Samsung Magician (optimization) software more than Intel's.

Samsung did come out with a dog with the 3D NAND stacked EVO 840 about 4 years ago, where SSDs that haven't been used in a while becomes excruciatingly slow - https://www.digitaltrends.com/com...ate-drive/

For backup storage, I would not recommend using SSDs or USB drives, a mechanical drive is still best - and better bang for your buck especially with larger capacities. What do you do with the savings? Buy a 3rd backup device, as you can never have too many backups with your non-replaceable precious data.

BTW - SSDs come in different thickness, so you should check if your Mac Pro will fit. This one is 2.5" Drive Height Ultra-slim 7mm - likely no problem

Please provide more details in your post. These are only available in-store in a few cities in US states. Please list them for readers. Not available in my area. Disappointed.
It's a Microcenter deal. You can assume it's in store only.

This is just a statement to make you feel bad, some people get satisfaction from putting other's down.
How's he putting anyone's down? By saying that there's possibility for these be cheaper in the future as well (maybe he worded it out in a wrong way by saying it could be bought back then but the way I saw the comment was that they're were cheaper before so might get to that price again)? At this point anyone mentioning the previous prices on any product is putting others down? What about then people posting future sale prices are those disrespectful as well since they're not available that instant? Stop taking everything so personal and making it about your feelings, maybe some people consider history of prices on products as being helpful instead to help them making a choice if current price is a deal or not for their needs.

We had an SSD go bad so we pried it open and the only thing in that whole case was a tiny memory stick and the adapter controller interface.
Over 75% of the case was just empty space. They just make these in that for factor to fit into drive slots. It was pretty cool but I'm a nerd.

Where's there a 2TB 2.5" HDD for $30? A used 1TB on eBay, bare, no enclosure runs $36.
