Southwest non-stop flights between Houston and Los Angeles are usually around $90 each way and include two checked bags and one carry on bag. It looks like they currently have some for $66 each way if you book a few weeks in advance.

I have never found $180 RT from Hobby to LAX, Burbank, or Ontario. I usually end up paying around $240 RT on Southwest if I'm lucky.

Use the low fare calendar [southwest.com] to see the days with cheapest flights. On the HOU-LAX route the cheapest flights should be non-stop.

Try the first 3 Tuesdays and Wednesdays in November. Each day has at least 1 flight from Houston to LA and lots of $75 trips back. There's 1 $71 trip back.

Ive been on Southwest once (RT)...worst flights ever...packed like sardines, smallish seats, musky. Feels like they may cut costs by not cleaning too often...just enough to get by. The walmart of the flight industry.
Ok all honesty you get what you pay for. In United's case you pay more for less. United now has three classes in coach alone. Premium economy, preferred economy and sardines. That basic economy fare barely lets you travel with a carryon.

I live in San Francisco, why all flight sale or deals are only from LAX?
Do you think those people in Los Angeles area are getting good flight deals from SFO ?

I fly SWA once a week.
On the rare occasions I fly United, I wished I was on a Southwest flight.

Don't know what route you were on, but SWA seats are far more comfortable than United economy seats. That said, if you are in biz class with United it's significantly better.

I prefer the open seating with SWA, but only because I have status and always board early and get a seat up front or where ever i want.

The lack of fees when changing flights to increase or decrease my stay is crucial for me.

United charges me 200 bucks a change. Yeah. No thanks. Not getting extorted another 200 dollars because my schedule opened up and I can go home to my kids earlier.
