Hands down Sony.

I do not own either buy I have seen both in stores and basements. The Sony XBR series used to be their top line but now it appears their "Master Series" is their top line. Not sure why Sony felt the need to rebrand. Absolute dickish move on their part. Just confuses customers.

Sony for these reasons:
1) $300 cheaper right now
2) 3 inches bigger vs 82"
3) Sony is direct lit vs edge
4) Better processor
5) Dolby vision vs HDR10+
6) And IMO looks more natural

FWIW, rtings.com rates the Q6 much higher than the 850G for movies (7.8 vs 6.3) and for HDR movies (7.9 vs 6.3). Otherwise they appear more or less comparable.

Must be an incentive to purchase at one retailer over another.... any good cashback or whatnot for any of these?

Also.... I'd really like to upgrade/upsize but my 10yo plasma just won't die

Correct but don't be mistaken that rtings.com only rates <= 75" Sony, which are all edge lit/IPS vs the 85" which is back lit/VA. They have yet to rate the 85" which is a different TV than the other x850's IMO and should get it's own score to compare to the other 80+ screens.

i.e. I wouldn't trust rtings in this case and would go to a store and look at them to make your decision, that's what I did. I'd speculate that if ratings did a review, the Sony XBR85X850 most likely would fall right between Sony XBRx900F and Samsung Q6.

Remember the big Plasma vs LCD wars from a couple of years ago? That was fun.

Best you can hope for is one of the retailers doesn't charge tax in your state

Both are direct lit, So it depends if you have a bright room or dark room and if you need better viewing angles of an IPS, since Sony is VA and LG is IPS.

Anybody know the real difference between this and the 950G? Differences worth the extra $1k?
