PSA for former SYW/Sears/Kmart SDers: unauthorized charge possibly forthcoming

Hopefully I am the only one experiencing this, but just in case, I figured I would summarize what transpired.

tl;dr Almost a year ago, they gave me a free MAX membership for no real reason, set it to auto-renew, and are now planning to bill me for the renewal. And canceling took quite a bit of digging...with no indication it actually worked.

-I haven't purchased anything from KMart/Sears since 3/2017, and hadn't purchased using actual money (as opposed to points) since 12/2016
-Became a Shop Your Way MAX member on 8/30/2018. Confused
Looking at my account, it shows "Annual Membership - FREE for VIP members." Ummm, ok. I had been VIP multiple times in the past, but hadn't bought one thing for actual money in over 18 months.
-Got email today from rewards@rewards.shopyourwayrewards.com with headline "Expiring soon! Renew your Shop Your Way MAX membership"
Email contents:
"Woohoo, DOCDEALS,
Your Shop Your Way MAX® membership will be renewed on 08/30/19.
As a reminder, $39 (plus applicable taxes) will be charged to the card you
have on file. You've got another 12 months of amazing benefits, exclusive
offers and loads of savings coming your way!"

Here's the link I found to check your status and/or cancel renewal and/or membership.

Code:

Of course, nothing on the website actually changes when you Cancel, so who knows.

Got this for 3 out of 5 of my accounts so far, the 3 that expire in 5 days. The funny thing is 4 of the 5 accounts were previously merged into the 5th so aren't even active anymore. I never signed up for Max on any account, it was automatic and free, never agreed to auto renew or any payment. Oddly these accounts are all now showing freecash offers (they stopped after they were merged) so I wonder if they've unmerged them all somehow.

Here is what I did for each account:
-Log into shopyourway.com
-Click your name in the upper right corner
-Click My Profile in the menu that pops up
-On the page that comes up, click Settings on the horizontal menu bar below your name (it seems to be in a different place in this menu bar for each of my accounts, you may have to click on "More" to see it)
-Click Shop Your Way Max on the left
-Click Cancel Renewal on the right
-Click Yes on the pop up
-As an extra step I then clicked SYW Max on the left again then "cancel membership" (next to cancel renewal) and clicked yes on the popup. I suppose if you are still using the account you don't want to do this step.
-After both cancels, it briefly says at the top "cancel successful".

Unfortunately I can't find anywhere to confirm that it actually "took". The accounts look exactly the same
Some other steps to potentially take:
-Click Account on the left side menu (a couple above the "Shop Your Way Max" from above) then near the bottom click "delete"
Note this only deletes your online account, your membership still remains active. I didn't do this as I do have some order history in this account I don't want to lose.
-Or call 1-800-991-8708 and ask to completely delete your membership. I didn't do this for the same reason and I also don't want to wait on hold forever
-And/or remove all saved payment methods from your account at Sears/Kmart. No idea if this has any impact on SYW membership, I can't find anywhere at SYW's website to remove payment method, but I also never gave them one, so it would seem that Sears/Kmart payment methods are the only ones that could be used. So I did do this for safety (given this shady crap I don't want them having my info anyway).

To remove your payment info from sears/kmart
-Go to sears.com or kmart.com (you should already be logged in since you logged into SYW website)
-Hover over your name at the top right
-Click "your account" in the drop down
-Click Edit Personal Info on the left of the page that comes up
-On the right click "remove" next to any saved cards. They should disappear and then say "you have no saved cards"
-Also while there, a bit below where your credit card was is a shop your way max section. Click "cancel membership" here too (unless you are actively using the account and don't want to lose the membership yet). My main (5th) account won't allow this as it says free VIP membership with no cancel option. We'll see if I get an email for this account at some point, it doesn't expire for another month. The other 4 allowed it and said successful, but then just go back to the same page with "cancel membership" button so who knows. I did do the SYW site "cancel renewal" for this account so maybe I'll lose my free VIP membership, but I never use sears anymore so no big deal.

After doing this, it still shows your membership and expiration date, so who knows. But at least the CC info is gone.

I tried cancelling it from SYWM and Sears but I can't get confirmation. I was able to cancel it with a confirmation through Kmart. Here is the link, no promises ...

Syw has gotten so bad they don't even care about issuing refunds or points anymore. They just straight up act like you didn't mention that they owe you points despite multiple emails. How they are not shut down for fraud is beyond me.

Call your credit card company and block or dispute the charge.

Done in OP. Good suggestion.

Right. What was scary in my situation though was that it was linked to a card that, while still active, I never, ever use. Noticing the charge in the first place might have taken some time. Of course, that aspect is my fault, and hopefully not common practice.

You should set email alerts on your card. On that card, I would make it strict, any transaction or balance over the minimum threshold, and any payment due.

I don't understand how Kmart is STILL in business, never mind Sears. It's like the retail undead.

OP SD messes with your link, so it does not take us to SYWM section. Here is the link to get there:

I got the same email and was like WTF. Glad I actually read it unlike most emails I get from them. I've pressed the cancel button multiple times but never gives me any sort of confirmation. I know it said nothing about auto renew when they gave it to me for free a couple years ago.

Why the hell would I pay for that if I still have to order $59 of product to get free shipping?

I tried to cancel renew. I have some points left in the account and some still in pending. I don't want to lose them if I cancel the membership.
Are you still a SYW member now?
Thanks
