Check your clearance at Walmart. I just picked up a shower head yesterday for $17. I think the price before clearance was around the $40-50. It was one of the nicer ones they sell. Can grab the brickseek link here soon.

Update: This is the one they have on clearance at Walmart for $17. Showing the Amazon link because I can't find it on the Walmart site to add the Brickseek link.

Use a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer. Just unscrew the pipe use the reducer and a 1/2 in pipe

I am reluctant to unscrew the pipe. The end that would be unscrewed is, of course, inside the wall. It was installed 22 years ago and probably hard to get going at this point. I am concerned that twisting the pipe may crack/loose something inside the wall and then I'd have a real problem.

On the other hand, putting the reducer between the 3/4" pipe and the shower head would look kludgy.

Yes, there always is a risk, but in my limited experience I was always able to unscrew the shower flange the wall with just a channel lock pliers. Might just give it a try.
