I guess from far enough away 1080p will look the same as 4k lol
On a 50 inch set our eyes cannot discern the difference at a distance of 10 feet, maybe less. There's an article out there that gives screen size and distance, don't have it bookmarked though, but I remember some basics.

I looked at a 50 inch Insignia 1080p and 4K next to each other yesterday at BB and was suprised I could see a difference at about 7 feet away, especially text (jaggies on 1080p). However I liked the 1080 pic better for some reason. Go figure.

Waiting on QLED to flood market so OLED can come down. These units should sell FAR at this point in time.

They are in the technology challenged group. Like me. I can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p content so I doubt 4k TV is going to make a difference on my Trinitron/WEGA TV.

Or people like me who get their content OTA. ATSC 3.0 tuners don't exist yet in 4k sets so a 4k tv tuner cant even receive a 4k OTA signal yet (nevermind that there is no requirement for broadcasters to switch from 1.0 to 3.0, the analog to digital switch they had to do it but with no one forcing them it may be many years before small markets switch)

My mom's got the 40something inch Insignia, for like 8 years now. Zero issues, good picture.
So, not this TV.

Get one of the last non-"smart" TVs that won't track what you're watching and/or shove ads down your throat.

There was a recent deal for a 49" Roku Smart TV (1080p) for $190.
https://slickdeals.net/f/13330693-49-tcl-49s325-1080p-smart-roku-led-hdtv-189-99-free-shipping?t=13330693

It was pretty thoroughly ripped as a bad deal for not being 4K, but at least it had Roku. Unless you really don't want a networked TV, this is a worse deal.

I'm pretty spoiled after getting the 39" insignia 4k Fire tv for $120 last year...if you are willing to give up some size or spend more bucks, the FIre tv is on sale too.
