Exactly. I just activate the service prior to the summer months when I backpack, and suspend the service immediately after. Small price to pay for peace of mind

I have this model. Works well, need a clear view of sky (it's not going to work inside a room). I pay the cheapest monthly plan when I need to activate it (per month like $11.95 for freedom plan). Gives you a sense of security if you are really off the beaten path. Can setup preset text messages that give up to 4 cellphone numbers or email addresses your exact location. Has built in USA map, compass, long battery life. Haven't had to use SOS feature yet, luckily. If you are hunting / off-roading / hiking in areas with no reception this is great. I use it with the mount that keeps it charged on my atv.

Still works to a degree without a plan, right?

Yes I believe GPS works without a plan but the main reason to buy this is for the remote text communication (when you're out of cell phone range) and the emergency rescue feature. So you can send basic texts to a loved one giving them updates, or can request help from them, or ask for an official search and rescue (sos feature) to come save you in an emergency.

It mentions subscription required for two way communication. That capability is one of the main features of this device. Satellite communications from anywhere isn't going to come cheap, but it could be the difference between life and death.

The cheapest plan is very cheap, and you can turn it off when you aren't using it. I activate mine 1-2 months out of the year for my big adventures, it's 100% worth the peace of mind. If shit goes down, you will be rescued with one of these - worth every penny in my opinion.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but seems like maybe not the best for world travel? Preloaded maps include NA and Mexico. Just out of curiosity though... don't imagine I'll be lost at sea in a downed plane needing this

Its meant less as a GPS and more as a Satellite communicator.

Its primary function is to allow you to communicate in remote area or get rescue if needed.

They are pretty cool devices, I had one for awhile. There were a lot of hiking area in Western NC that dont have cell coverage, so being able to communicate with people anywhere there is Iridium satellite coverage is pretty cool.

Typically satellite phones are out of the price range of most so an affordable device like this is pretty cool.

i'll have to take another look at it. i believe in plb's and i've had my mcmurdo fastfind plus for many years, take it with me everywhere so i understand the important. but it's old and i'm looking to replace it. as i was about to buy another plb (resqlink 425), i see there are these satellite communicator devices that i guess i need to look into. having to pay a sub to me means one day the provider goes out of business or changes the offering/price and you might not get those options. i may continue to stick with just the plb because i really don't have a need to talk to anyone when i am super remote.

I should also mention this keeps exact track of where you have been in up to 15 second tracking intervals. You can then view this online or on the phone app on a later date.
