You can take out the removable 4gb and replace with a 12gb module.
The spec on the website says that the maximum memory capacity is 8GB; why is that? I'm not trying to be critical, just trying to understand it so I make the right decision.

Another deal for an IdeaPad (https://www.officedepot.com/a/pro...6-Screen/) shows the same processor but a max mem capacity of 12GB.

I got this laptop with the pen included on prime day. After popping in an extra 12Gb of RAM it runs beautifully.
Pros:
Good construction with a nice rubberized matte top and the hinges feel sturdy.
Sharp, clear screen.
Touchscreen functions well.
RAM is upgradable.
Fast (with extra RAM).
Backlit keyboard feels nice to type on (for me at least).
Works well in tablet mode.
Can use active stylus.
Cons
No USB 3 charging.
Only one spot for the hard drive.
The stylus can be a little finicky.
Battery life isnt fantastic.
Max brightness on screen is still dim compared to other laptops in this range.

In addition it can be used for light to mid gaming and works awesome in table mode for games like slay the spire and wargroove as well as digital board games.
repped. can you tell us what battery life iis not fantastic means. say for generaly web browsing, you tube videos, wiith brightness at 75% or so? 5 hours, 7 hours?

Cheaper than prime day... by 9 dollars, but that's a pack of smokes.

It literally shows a stylus in the product images with the laptop touching the screen..
That doesn't mean it does though. There's plenty of product pages on Amazon, best buy, Walmart etc that show a pen, but do say it does NOT come with it.

However, this one does indeed come with it.

okay, that makes sense, I thought I was going crazy.

So buy a 16GB stick for $60 bucks, sell the 4GB stick for ~$20, have a ~$500 laptop with these specs plus 20GB of RAM sounds like a pretty compelling offer to me.

Are there any performance gains graphics wise between these new gen ryzen mobile APUs and last gen?

Yeah sorry, I meant you can add another 16gb stick.

More ram is needed on this processor as the ryzen 5 3500u processor dedicates 2gb ram to graphic card. So, the built in 8gb only gives u 6gb system ram.

I believe you can allocate more to the Vega 8 graphic card so adding a 16gb stick (20gb total) will give you plenty of ram to give to the graphics card.

And to the guy who asked about 8gb limit on Lenovo's website, that is wrong. Many people have been upgrading this specific laptop's memory beyond 8gb.

Look at the may thread (and amazon reviews) on this laptop for more info:

Edit: I bit. In 4 1. Gonna return the $399 Asus laptop to Costco.

It's a great deal (4 years warranty with Costco Visa) but I'm giving it as a gift to someone out of country so the warranty is moot.

I just got my i5-8265u version from the SD post a few days ago. I don't know how exact or close this ryzen version and that one are but I can comment on the build quality at least for my version. So far, I'm very happy with it. Sturdy body for my preference, the lid has this matte finish which is really nice. The hinges seem to be very sturdy as well and I feel like that should be expected since this laptop was made to support that tablet/tent formation and repeated folding. I think the inside part is plastic but it doesn't really bend that much when you press down on keys or other parts. The keyboard keys, I actually enjoy them personally. They have a nice touch and receptive feel when you press down for a chiclet keyboard. The screen looks pretty crisp as well although I'm not an expert on color accuracy for IPS panels. Compared to my desktop monitor VA panel, the colors are much more vibrant. Others have stated before and I can kind of see it now, but the screen brightness is pretty low. At max, if you were outside or in direct sun, I would find it fairly difficult to see clearly.

That's just assuming that these two laptops are the same in build quality and only differ in hardware specs. If they are different, then I guess you can just ignore this comment.

Is this the best pen? https://www.officedepot.com/a/pro...Pen-Black/

Also, buying for a college student. How does this compare to Surface Pro 6?
Buy from Lenovo. Cheaper. $25. It sometimes can be found for $20.

I think the battery life on the Ryzen cpu pc's are lower than others because the igpu is taxing on the system. However, maybe their definition of low battery life is different from yours so that should need some clarifying.

Specs for maximum memory are very often understated.

I believe they do it so as to discourage people from buying cheaper machines and upgrading them (Apple does this on many of their computers, IMO to get people to buy new instead of upgrading old LINK [ramjet.com]). A naive customer who wants 20GB of RAM would believe they needed a higher cost machine to do it, rather than buy something like this and swap the replaceable 4GB module with a 16GB module.

A DDR4 system should be able to use 16GB modules regardless of what the manufacturer says. Of course, sometimes there is only one slot, or sometimes one or both modules are permanently soldered in, so those aren't going to be upgrade-able. And the complexity of disassembling the laptop to access the RAM varies widely from laptop to laptop, it can be a 30 second job that requires removing a single screw, or can require you to literally take the whole damn thing apart.

I also got the I5 version, waiting for it to arrive.

Anyone know the performance difference btw this one and the I5 version?

Price is about the same.
16GB vs 8GB but can upgrade.

From quick googling, Ryen 5 3500U has GPU.
Wondering if I should return I5 and get this...
