American express downgrade and upgrade triggered offer - YMMV

I know I will most likely get flak for posting this from the churning snobs, but oh well LOL!

I had upgraded my Blue Cash Everyday (BCE) card last year to the Blue Cash Preferred (BCP) with a special offer that waived the annual fee for a year, and it came with a $150 bonus after spending $2000 in three months.

The card has been great especially using it at Meijer to purchase MC and Visa gift cards when they are running the $10 off specials (buy a $100 the card for $95~ after fees and get 6% back).

However, my fee renewal was coming up in august, and I decided not to pay the annual fee just to get the 6% tier. So I canceled it a few weeks ago and downgraded back to the BCE.

Today, I just received ANOTHER email from Amex saying that if i upgraded to the BCP again , they would give me $150 after spending $1000. I called up, and the rep confirmed I was eligible since I had received the email. So I upgraded the card again. Even with the $95 fee, I am still coming out ahead ~ $50 plus 6% for the next year.

The nice thing about this is that (as far as i can tell) they do not need to do another credit pull to re-upgrade your card.

Here is my timeline
Sept 2018 - upgraded from BCE to BCP (no fee and $150 bonus after 2k spend)
Aug 2019 - Downgraded from BCP to BCE to avoid $95 fee
Aug 2019 - recieved upgrade email from AMEX for $150 back after 1k spend , $95 annual fee)

TLDR; If you have the BCP and were on the fence about canceling, you may get an offer to re-upgrade back to the BCP if you downgrade to the BCE.

Anyways, hope this helps someone, and enjoy!

I've done this probably 4-5 times over the last few years. Definitely profitable.

I followed this same route this year but did not receive an email the past six months. I wonder if I should give them a call 🤔

Nice! I am in the same situation with the BCP (upgraded last year just for the $150, planning to downgrade before the fee kicks in). Unlike you, the card has been virtually useless for me, since I get all my groceries at Sam's or Walmart. I think I did take advantage of one gift card promotion at Safeway, but that's about it. I'll give this a try and see what happens. Thanks for posting!

I also downgraded to the no annual fee Blue Cash Everyday from the BCP. Its been months. Never received another upgrade offer. So it is definitely a YMMV.

Question on AX BCP

Is AX still paying the 6% on gift card purchases made in Supermarkets?

Heard something about AX refusing to pay points on gift card purchases.

Anyone?

Important thing about buying prepaid Visa/Mastercard with any American Express card.

Amex (unlike other cards) has what is called "Level 3 data". This means not only can American Express know where you shop and how much your total is, but they can know what individual items you purchased, their individual prices, and how much was tax.

Not every merchant sends Level 3 Data to American Express. However, American Express charges an additional fee to merchants that do not send Level 3 Data (or you could look at it as a discounted fee for sending Level 3 Data). Therefore, you can expect any large company to send Level 3 Data to American Express, due to the aggregate fees.

This means American Express knows when you purchase these cash instruments, such as pre-paid Visa and Mastercard. They are strictly against this kind of thing, called manufactured spend.

Even if they credit you the rewards, you should not breathe a sigh of relief. American Express has a dedicated team, called RAT, whose job is to search and find this, and they have no problem with clawing back bonuses and rewards, such as points or cash back, even months after the fact.

It's good to know that Amex has a team that looks for these type of events. Something that was not included in the above post is that your bonus offer should be satisfied with organic purchases. While prepaid cards generate rewards they do not count towards (consistently at least towards the bonus offer). So you will still get 6% towards the purchase. But not get credit for the amount to satisfy the bonus offer.

I always do it in moderation and that has always avoided the "RAT" team

I also got an email to upgrade BCP. But I don't see waiver for annual fee and it says $150 statement credit after spending 1K.
Anyone else have same situation?

I googled BCP and I could see $300 Cash Back and copy pasted the link in a different browser and the CB is $250!

I feel certain they do pay 6% on BCP - I dont review down to the granular level, but I dont have any reason to believe they 'filter' my grocery purchases at Kroger and subtract GCs. I always use my "Up to $6000" limit every year, of which is about $200/mo in GC purchases in addition to groceries..

Granted, someone that does $2k GC purchases a month might have a different opinion.

YMMV.

I do heavy shopping at Sam's and Walmart as well. Here's a pro tip if you're lucky enough to have a Neighborhood Market Walmart: amex purchases code as grocery. Don't try it for visa though, won't work. Yeah, I was surprised too. I now buy Walmart gift cards and use for all Sam's club and Walmart purchases.

Safeway constantly has the Visa and MasterCard deals too which I use at Costco since they auto drain. I buy Costco cash cards online with the MC. Oh and don't forget third party gift cards like Amazon earn gas/grocery rewards.

My BCP upgrade turned into actually using it way more than I anticipated.

No one ever said anything about a waived fee. You pay the fee. You profit $50 for spending $1k and get a 6% grocery card for a year.

I had pretty much the same timeline, got the same offer, and did the same thing.
