From Sept. 16 through Sept. 30, Walmart is holding its first-ever car seat recycling event in celebration of National Baby Safety Month.

Customers can trade in used car seats at the service desk in any participating Walmart store and receive a $30 Walmart gift card that can be used in a store or online to buy items for their baby.

All car seats collected during the program will be recycled through TerraCycle.

Through the Walmart Car Seat Recycling Program, traditionally non-recyclable car seats are now nationally recyclable," said Tom Szaky, CEO and Founder, TerraCycle in a news release.

How it works:

Bring your car seat to the trade in event at your participating Walmart Supercenter .
Take the car seat to the Customer Service counter to be recycled
Receive your $30 Walmart gift card* that you can use in-store or online to buy items for your baby

Additional details about event:

Limit of 2-trade-ins per household
Any car seat brand is accepted

Well I was the first at my store @ 7 AM - needless to say they don't inform their employees very well.

The CSR knew *of* the event but didn't know the details; apparently store managers get an email with the instructions for the return - if it's processed incorrectly the store does not receive credit for it. The had a printout regarding the event and there were instructions however they were incomplete.

Anyway, they are supposed to scan a barcode; the seats go in as damaged returns without receipt, and you have to provide an ID. The issue is the barcode that she had printed out (getting that barcode took like 30 mins as they tracked down a manager with the correct "level" that had access) wouldn't scan and manually entering the code wasn't working; fortunately the CSR recognized there were too many digits in the code and left off an initial "0" and that worked. I did have to provide my ID and got a regular store GC for both seats. (FWIW the code is 007874235474 in case you need it).

FWIW they didn't check the seats per se - I sold them a couple old Britax convertible seats. What I'm saying is that you might be able to sell them a booster-style seat as they didn't really pay much attention as to what the seats were or if they were eligible.

wonder if it's somehow a "baby only" GC. Otherwise, just go to the dump/transfer station and pickup some old nasty baby seats and sell them to Walmart for $30/ea.

Just wondering do people sell old car seats for an amount that makes the difference between $30 and what you pay plus time to find and then bring to Walmart worth it?

Let's just saybest case you buy a $5 seat and now get a $30 Walmart gift card at a cost of $25 to you..was that worth the time and that's best case scenario. Most likely people are gonna try to get like $10 or $15

Nothing in the terms says the gift card is restricted to baby items. I imagine its a standard walmart card with some baby images on it and they are hoping most people will spend it on baby related goods, since those have huge margins

From September 16–30, bring in the car seat that your kiddo's outgrown and get a $30 Walmart gift card for your baby's next car seat! Car seats collected in this program will be recycled 100% by TerraCycle and each component will be diverted from the landfill.

That's a deal breaker if they enforce that. I don't need another car seat!

OMG I can just imagine people rolling up with 2 nasty car seats from the dump and getting $60 in WM GCs. I wonder how they enforce the 2 per household rule? Since it's not a MIR, you could drop off 2 car seats per WM in your area. I've got at least 5 in my area, and could have the wife drop them off too, so I'm looking at a potential $600 in WM GC if I want to run around the city.

This is going to be exploited too easily.
I'd assume you and your spouse have the same address on your DL. Pretty easy to track really.

People shouldn't be selling used car seats. There's a reason why thrift stores don't

The local thrift store sells cribs with the drop down sides. Apparently they don't know the law about cribs.

Moot point anyway, my local Walmart is not having the car seat buyback.
