The description says 9.2 or 5.2.4, but does anyone know if it can be used in 7.2.2? Thanks in advance.

yes it can - it doesn't matter the configuration as long as no more than 9 speakers are used. it has connections for surround back and rear presence but you can only use 1 of those two connections

Forgive my ignorance. I have a 5.1 now, and have 4 height speakers in my main room. Is that 5.1.4? I'd love to use the 4 speakers in the ceiling for Dolby atmos. Is the ex-x3080

Yes. That's 5.1.4.

Thanks! Is the rx-a3080 a better choice? It's got more power I believe. But I'm only going to run 5.1.4.
Or is is best to wait for the next gen of Yamaha receivers?

Well the more power is subjective, if your speakers are not very efficient and your preferred listening is more at reference levels then the extra power MAY be advantageous.
This receiver will most likely perform just as well as the 3080 as far as the set up you're looking to do, ultimately you would have to make that determination.
Whether to wait would be completely up to you, what feature(s) do you feel you have to wait for that this gen doesn't have is what you have to ask yourself.

Thank you again. I checked the online manual and sure enough, it can do 7.2.2.

Ordered. Seems like it's been on sale at this price a handful of times in the last few months, so nothing too special, but I've been lurking on upgrading for many months now. My RX-V779 (which has been great) only has 5 HDMI ports and no Dolby Vision support.

Will this support the new HDMI 2.1 for the 2019 OLED models?

Nothing does right now. 2020 models being announced soon might list it. Supposedly there will be firmware updates to update some 2018/2019 models when this happens too.

Hi All -
I've been keeping an eye on the Denon 3500 or better I assume the 3600... Though I see a lot of comments on SD from people about the Yamahas, ie the 2085 being better. Is it just the 9.2 instead of 7.2 (i doubt I'll ever set up as 7.2 let alone 9.2) or are the Yamahas really better in some / many ways? Quickly skimming reviews online, seem the Denons get more favourable reviews in general. I have a very old Denon and looking to upgrade to 4k etc. Want at least audio from HDMI into a 2nd zone as my current Denon does and then at least I guess 5.1/2 or 7.2 4K into main zone.
thanks,
Brett
