Unless they make the 3500 $130, how would it even compete with this lol.
3600 cost 50% more for 25% better performance. That's def quality advice. ROFL.
Not entirely true, in multithreaded apps the 3600 is generally about 50% faster than the i5-9400, gaming is probably closer to the 30% mark. The 2600 is the same price on amazon and very similar in performance.

This does seem like a pretty good deal on a budget gaming cpu, it all depends on which platform you want to invest in. After 18 years of not looking at AMD I am planning on building an R5 3600 system. Though it does seem that there is some issues with boost performance according to der8auers results anyway. I'd like to see what the 3600 is capable of in person.

Why is this on FP?? I have tracked the price of this processor for over a month. It's been at this price since I started checking the price.....

Regardless, this might be the best cost effective processor these days. My son built a system using this processor during this summer. I am going to build another one for my younger son soon. With 1660ti, the system showed amazing performance.

You need to actually be able to boot before you can even enter the BIOS, otherwise you wouldn't need to update at all
Right, if you don't have a compatible cpu installed you can't update. Stay clear of H310 unless you know for sure it is updated, or have a budget cpu you can throw in like a G4900.

There are some new boards that can update the BIOS without a chip (or even ram) in them. ASUS calls theirs USB BIOS Flashback.

Intel Core i5-9400F Desktop Processor 6 Cores Turbo Without Graphics with ASUS Prime Z370-P II GA1151 (Intel 9th Gen) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VSLL...BDb0BA9AQQ [amazon.com] this is what amazon has for the bundle. Don't know enough to know if it's a good deal or not though.
What do you recommend for RAM?

That's also a legitimate possibility, though I thought ASUS reserved that for the high end stuff. Maybe MSI has some on the low end, it's pretty common on their B450s

Would it make sense to upgrade from my i3-6300 to this. I upgraded my gtx950 to a 1070 so my cpu is probably the bottleneck but maybe if I'm already replacing my well working aaa high setting 60fps build I should wait for something even better.. Thoughts?

I ran across this by accident on a Lenovo PC and it turned out to be a lifesaver.
The BIOS itself had become corrupted somehow and the system would not boot.
The mobo had the feature to update/reflash BIOS from USB stick without a CPU (even though I had a CPU installed).

I did the reflash and voila, the BIOS was back in action, and the system booted.
I was so impressed I got an ASUS board with the same feature.

Intel has been on sale a lot lately. There once was a Shintsu who said only garbage CPUs go on sale.

This is a good deal for a capable processor. It's a slick deal if you buy through Google Express with the 20% off.

Understand that this chip and the motherboard that supports it has no future upgrade path. The most that could ever be done is grabbing a 9900k a few years down the road and popping it into your system. The alternative is to grab a Ryzen 2600 with a X470 or X570 motherboard and have an upgrade path to Ryzen 4th gen in the future. Either way you'll pay about the same price right now.
