These first gen shows have major issues with the screens going bad. We blew through 3 in a row over about 8 months (under warranty).

I was also disappointed by this problem especially considering how new the device was at the time and the fact we never used it as a touchscreen, so it wasnt like it was being manhandled. One day out of the blue the screen became glitchy.

I was sent a refurbed replacement around the time the 2nd gen was released and so far that one hasn't acted up (knock on wood).

Yeah, ours was only ever touched when it was initially set up. But yeah, out of the blue after a few months, the screen started glitching out and deteriorated to completely non-functional screen in a matter of days both times it happened (first two units, the original and first replacement, same deal). The third one has been good for a few months now. But yeah, even at $50, I'd be hard pressed to recommend this "deal" but at least it has a full 1 year Amazon warranty...

Also, the sound quality on this is pretty crap compared to the original echo and the later shows.

I have 2 of them with no problems at all. I've had one of them for over 2 yrs and the other for about 10 months. I guess I've lucked out so far. In my opinion, the screen image is average at best (compared to other smart display devices). I use mine a lot with my Amazon Recast DVR for watching live TV and recordings.

I also have a Lenovo Smart Display 10" (google) and that has a much much better screen image (1080p resolution). If you have a chance to get one of those on sale (was recently $104 at Rakuten) and you don't mind having a google smart display vs amazon smart display, I'd get that one instead.

Good info here. Thanks.

Still tempting with the extra $6 for 2 year Squaretrade......since it sounds like it would be needed Smilie

Is this worth getting if I already have a fire tablet in show mode? It's plugged in and mounted in my kitchen.

From what I can tell, the tablet does everything this can while also being mobile.

Basically better speakers at the expense of a larger footprint (since the aren't mountable that I'm aware of).

I've had two of them as well since launch. Still working like champs and still in use. I'm not sure of the percentage of defects, so I'm not sure that's a valid conclusion at this point. Amazon's return policy is fine, so not a lot of risk on these if they do go bad.

Even so, I think you'd be better off waiting for the Show 5 to hit $50. This has a larger display but not significantly so.

Agreed. If you don't want to wait. Via Amazon using coupon code SHOWFIVE2PK you can get 2 (two) of the current gen Show 5 Nightstand displays for around $150 ($30 savings.) Given the screen issue history, might be a better option for eager buyers.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about this deal. Get the $35-$40 + 25% new echo device (use in future when a deal on new echo devices comes out) under the amazon echo swap program, if not for any other purpose.
