Confirming that statement.

Downloaded visa form, filled it out on computer, and printed it. Went to Chinese consulate in L.A. Took a number and waited a half hour to be called up to the window. Gave a printed copy of my hotel reservation & airline ticket, and a copy of the first page of my passport. Submitted original passport. Requested 10 year visa. Came back 4 days later. Paid $140 on credit card. Picked up passport , now with 10-year chinese visa.

It all went very smoothly. Hardest part was finding a parking space!

Book Air China round flight to Manila. Take 20hr layover in Beijing. They have 72hr transit Visa policy. Enjoy Great wall of China one way and Beijing city another day. Oh Did I forget to tell you that Air China will give you free Hotel (crappy ofcourse but works to sleep) in beijing if you have more then 8 hours layover.

I recently did this for my Thailand trip as well as last India trip.
I have seen Singapore, Hongkong and Zurich same way. If you have US passport, lot of countries offer Visa free extended transit times.
Enjoy these cities now. You can thank me later :-)

Looks like <$400 out of Philly. Other side of the state is much more expensive ($500+).

LOL, no. I think it's either 3 or 6 days, and only as a transit between 2 other countries.

No. 6 days and you have to transit. Which isn't hard to set up but still something you have to do. You could transit to HK and checkout the action. It's also pretty cheap right now since the hotel vacancy rate is way up and many good hotels are 50% off their normal pricing at this time of year.

Which isn't much of a deal since the low $400s is pretty much the normal price from the West Coast.
