PSA : Bank Of America Ending Shopsafe on September 20 $0.01

Just recieved an email from Bank of America stating they will stop their Virtual Credit Card service Shopsafe by September 20. Its a bummer because I used to use it on shady sites.

Here is the email text :
We're committed to providing you the most up-to-date security. As new technology has become available, we have made the decision to retire our online ShopSafe® service on September 20. You may need to update credit card information stored with online merchants.

What is changing?

We remain committed to providing the highest level of security when you transact online with your Bank of America® credit or debit card, and we're always looking for ways to improve your digital banking experience. On September 20, we are discontinuing our online ShopSafe® service. After this date, you will no longer be able to use this service to create new ShopSafe virtual credit card numbers or make purchases online with saved ShopSafe virtual credit card numbers.

Why the change?

Technology has come a long way since we launched ShopSafe. We believe the wide range of security alerts and best-in-class fraud tools we use today, combined with the availability of digital wallets, provide our customers with an enhanced level of protection and a better user experience.

What do I need to do?

Consider using a digital wallet. Bank of America supports a number of digital wallets that enable you to securely shop online without having to share your credit card account number with merchants. More information on digital wallets.

If you have ShopSafe card numbers saved with online merchants or linked to recurring bill payments, please update with your current credit or debit card information prior to September 20.

Thank you for banking with us.

I could not figure out where to post this so posted it here. Braching myself for some TDs but hoping it helps someone.

I got the same email too, does anyone know of any sites or services that will let us do the same thing that shopsafe did? I know privacy.com exists but you have to fund that with a bank account which I will not do.

There's an app for it now, forgot the name off top of my head, maybe others out there can recommend?

CapitalOne Eno has this, though not sure if it is open for everyone. I was able to enable it despite not being invited though (probably had to ask customer care to manually add me or something, don't remember). See if you are able to use it if you have Capital One.

Not so much now that they decided to remove 80% of its benefits
Quote :
Effective September 22, 2019, Worldwide Car Rental Insurance, Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection, Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance, Trip Delay Protection, Baggage Delay Protection, Lost Baggage Protection, Citi® Price Rewind, and 90 Day Return Protection will be discontinued and will no longer be provided for purchases made on or after that date. Coverage for purchases made before that date will continue to be available, and you may continue to file for benefits in accordance with the current benefit terms. Roadside Assistance Dispatch Service and Travel & Emergency Assistance will be discontinued and will not be available on or after September 22, 2019.
And add extended warranty to that list which even the most basic credit card has these days, the only reason to continue using it is for the extra .5 % Cashback above cards like freedom unlimited and other similar ones, in my opinion it's not worth it anymore

does the app version let you bypass funding with a bank and with a cc instead? i signed up for privacy before but didnt realize it required a bank account fund.

I have citi 2% which is my main card for generating one time use credit cards. Capital Eno was a clusterF due to being on a family plan and the line not under my name, it couldn't verify me.

bummer will the existing cc #s just no longer work?

related Rant: Hate the fact that BOA doesn't do email or chat for CC customer support.

Yes, the ones that do this for credit cards usually die in time though, so unless you go with Citi or CapOne, which might follow BoA's footsteps, Privacy.com is still the main viable alternative.
