Insignia Connect - discontinued product compensation (cameras/freezers/smart plugs)

I went to use my WiFi plug today, and got a popup from the app saying they were getting discontinued. The app directed me to a website [symphonysummit.com] that asks you for your serial number, and says you may be eligible for compensation. I filled out the form for my wifi plug and the website said they'd reply within 3 business days with my compensation amount. Supposedly they'll be sending a Best Buy eGift card.

Not sure how much it'll be (didn't figure it would be much), but figured I should mention it in case anybody here had one of the discontinued products.

I was able to submit two serial numbers from two wall switches but two other ones would not take. I will have to call. No idea what kind of compensation they are giving. It says it will take 3 business days to find out.

Sounds like they are taking a play from the Lowe's Iris exit. Bravo, Insignia.

Thanks. I just entered the serial number of an Insignia wifi Smart plug. I stopped using it months ago cuz it kept losing its connection. Glad I switched to TP Link/Kasa before I started purchasing a lot of smart stuff.

The method they suggested (on the FAQ) of using the Info icon within the Connect app didnt provide a valid number for me. Rather than unscrew the wifi wall switch to look at the serial number sticker on the side, I was able to look at the hostname/mac info from my router admin page to pull the serial number.

The hostname was Insignia-B0F1xxxxxxxx, and the part starting with b0f1 corresponds to the mac address of the device. Apparently they use the MAC address as the serial as well.

This is disappointing. I have 10 of these devices and we rely on most of them. I don't understand why in an age of smart technology something like this would be discontinued. My guess is this is a financial decision based on operating costs but it makes me wonder if best buy will be the next Shopko, Sears, or, toysrus. Also why can't they be more transparent with what they are reimbursing?

But assuming that they continue to perform, don't neeed "upgrades" or fixes, and you can likely add units on the secondary sales market, on the bottom line you might be coming out ahead with the compensation.

The problem is that they don't work on any other app. They will hold any timers created before the shutdown or can be used as a power button. Voice command over Alexa will be dead. They are basically bricking these.

Understand better, stinks. When our Jawbone fitness line dropped off, nothing in return, kaput, ghosted, etc., what was probably the best designed simple fitness tracker became useless.
