They're both very good receivers that should work just fine for you. It comes down to personal preference. You're question is the equivalent of saying I'm looking for a new truck, should I buy Ford or Chevy? You'll have fans of each. Denon will give you a little more features at a lower price. Yamaha prices don't drop the same but they have better resale value and probably the most reliable receiver out there. If you can get one significantly cheaper than the other, I'd go with that.

Will these do 4 channels (speakers) of atmos? Current Yamaha only does 2 and I have a hard time finding specs that specify how many channels of atmos it supports.

Yes it can, 5.x.4 out of the box, or 7.x.4 if you add a 2 channel amp. Meaning, this can decode 11 channels of audio but only has amplification built in for 9.

Ordered the 3080. Thanks for posting. Been wanting the 3070 since it came out, ordered it and before it even arrived the 3080 was announced. Sent that thing right back. Been waiting on a deal for the 3080 ever since.

I believe it was released late 2018 as their 2019 model. The 3070 was last year's model.

Midrange receivers with midrange sound.
Well that's subjective and some believe that your speakers produce the sound your hear.
So if your concerned about the quality of your sound, look at speakers before your look at your receiver, it has much less to do with it.

Can someone help me with a question,i am debating on the Yamaha RX-A3080 and the Denon AVR-X4500H. I want the better of the two for home theater Blu-ray/4K UHD more than i do for music. Anyone care to chime in for which would be more suitable for a 7.1.2 set up for what i am asking that has either or both receivers? I will be using 2 powered subs with front directional atmos speakers on top of the main L/R fronts speakers. I Also am using a LG OLED OLED65E9PUA for viewing with a Panasonic DP-UB9000 and have plans for a future 4K projector, have no plans to use for gaming as i already have a curved PC set up.
