Does refurbished mean just a defect that was fixed or do you know whether it has been used heavily. Appreciate if you can give your insight

I checked to make sure these are manufacturer refurbished. That means they are drives returned by RMA or to the store. These drives were tested, fixed if needed, and recertified. Although they have only a 90 day warranty, they'd be great for non critical apps like a home media server or cold storage. You might get a couple years out of them in a home raid. Clearly, not for business use. An excellent deal.

Last FP deal shows average poweron hours in the 40-50k range. But not sure if same seller: goharddrive this time

These are pretty hit or miss. Some of them are at like 15k hrs, pass SMART tests and lots of life left, others have bad sectors and 30k+ hrs.

Might grab one in the hopes that it's closer to the 20k mark, but returns on these are a pain as well. Decent price but know the risks.

Not bad, but only a 90 day warranty. Catch a deal by GoHardDrives to get the same drives with a 3 year warranty.

Newegg is also listing new Seagate ST33000651NS for $50 . If these really are new, they may be a better deal. https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16822148759 with a 5 year warranty

What have you heard about returns being a pain? Pay to return? Has to be packaged a certain way etc?

People who run SMART tests have a higher chance of their drives failing.
