This has a TN display, Here is a comparison picture of this laptop with a laptop with an IPS deisplay from above viewing angle (160 degrees).

I bought one and confirm that it is indeed a TN display. It is not as bad as some TN displays though. Windows Device Manager also shows the display as a BOE0731 display. It also has PWM on brightness levels lower than 100%.

I updated first. My update search was taking forever too, so I deleted the Windows Update file cache and after that the updates showed up instantly, and downloaded quickly. I'm considering mounting a SD card too, are there any downsides?
Shouldn't be, esp if the card flush mounts. I was going to use this Samsung 128:

jdixon's reply to my post saying Windows 10 was developed by morons.

Here you go.

Warning Issued For Millions Of Microsoft Windows 10 Users

Windows 10 problems have been coming thick and fast in recent months and Microsoft has been struggling to keep up. And now one particularly troublesome update has struck again.

Picked up by PCMag, Microsoft's new KB4512941 update has decided that causing CPU usage to spike was just the start because now reports are coming in that it "turns everything orange" or red. While some users have found only their screenshots turn orange, others report that their whole desktop turns red:

"When I start Windows, the login screen looks good, but when I put my credentials and the desktop is shown, it gradually starts turning red," explained one affected user. "The only element that remains with the correct colour is the mouse pointer.

As it stands, Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the problem on the update's official page (confirming the CPU spike problem took several days) but while the company remains silent, the good news is users have found several workarounds.
Sheltier -- Repped because I want to acknowledge that your posted reply is both thoughtful and informative. Some posts deteriorate to (mostly inexplicable) vitriol, leaving me wondering about the mindset and character of the poster...rather than information value of the post.

Finally, fyi, I'm actually a former software developer from some years back. To a person, my colleagues and I *always* wanted to do our best work for the best product results. The compromises came with 'corporate' pressures -- time-to-market, competition, costs, etc., -- *often* frustrating even us (the developer) when products are rushed to market despite having known, fixable problems.

Great value laptop for doing homework for an 8 year old who has to use the keyboard.

Horrible if you have to sit next to her and help her on her homework.

If my daughter drops it or spills water on it, I won't feel so bad.

The value extends to many adults as well. Aside from the less than average screen, it's a great little machine for the price.

What is everybody's thoughts on this versus this refurbished unit https://www.staples.com/acer-spin...t_24383888 ?

Thinking about going the refurbished route since that has an IPS display but I'm not too familiar with the quality of Acer's refurbished units. I purchased (but haven't opened) this laptop, so trying to decide before I start using this unit.
I got this yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. It is listed as refurbished but if I didn't see the sticker I would think it was new. The build quality is amazing. Everything is metal, including the bottom. The screen is also exceed expectations. Not only is it IPS but it's a bright IPS. It also has no back light bleed to speak of.

I was surprised to see with hwinfo64 it's getting 9 watts of total power from the battery instead of the 6 it is specked for. They included a large copper heat sink to make that work. That allows for the igpu to get power when the cpu is under 100% load. Heat wise the max I was able to get the cpu or gpu was 61 deg. I was expecting far worse for a cpu without a fan.

After all the windows updates were finished and bloatware was removed it was ok. I had planned on using edge because works better with low power cpus but I ended up loading firefox with all my desktop addons. It did not run as fast as my desktop but I did not notice the speed difference until I ran them side by side. Youtube/Netflix and Amazon prime ran great. Install the Youtube Classic addon if you want a peppy youtube.

Negatives are it will hit 100% cpu in task manager when opening some programs and my desktop will only hit that when in certain games. Also at 2.7 lbs it is heavy for it's size. Also it doesn't come with the active stylus. You can find Dell active stylus' on ebay for under $10 but I don't know if they will work.

Here are some reviews I found:
https://www.ultrabookreview.com/1...-1-review/
https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews...cer-spin-1
https://www.pcmag.com/review/3605...1-32n-c2x3

Overall for $180 at your doorstep it's a no brainer.

If it's true that you lose MS Office, then how do you get it back? Or is it a trial version and doesn't matter?

Also, why are we installing Chrome and not FireFox? Or leaving it as is?
I am accustomed to FireFox..

Lastly, is this advice good for all laptops, or just this one?

Thanks.
Yes it will remove office. I registered first to get the free 1 month trial of office (then turned off auto renew). Next I debloated, then went back into MS website and downloaded and installed it again.

How is the battery life on that model? I'm getting close to 10hrs on the n5000/TN screen model, which really surprised me, first laptop that actually gets what is advertised. I would expect that one to get less with the IPS screen and older CPU, but the nicer screen is prob worth it.

Does anyone know the max read speed of the SD card reader? Don't want to overspend for the fastest speeding card when not needed. TIA

I'm pretty sure it was an office trial. You could see if you can get a home use license through your work if they offer that. Or perhaps use open office.
Thanks.

Oh, so it was only a trial...
How about getting a license key for $10 or less that I heard about?
Is Open Office the best alternative? Even though I use that, I've heard there are several good options out there.

Shoot if you find that $10 license key deal, please post it here. I would definitely jump on that

So far it's been good but I haven't done a full drain yet so I'm not sure.
