The Kobo Aura screen is noticeably better than the base Kindle. The Aura has a resolution of 1024x768 (212 ppi) while the newest gen Kindle is 800x600 (166 ppi). But more important than the hardware difference is the fact that Kobo doesn't lock you into the Amazon ecosystem for ebooks since it supports ePub files. Newer versions of the Kobo firmware have native Overdrive support, for direct download of books from your public library. And even if you want to make use of Amazon for ebooks you can use the open-source software Calibre to convert files for the Kobo.

At this price, this is a much better deal than the base Kindle (and no "special offers" advertisements either). However, I would personally recommend the Kobo Clara HD due to the warm orange LEDs that make it better for your eyes when reading in the dark or before bedtime. It can be found for $99 from Walmart when on sale.

Been waiting for a deal like this!

Based on my research this "Walmart eBooks Edition" seems to be the same exact model as the Kobo Aura Edition 2 (released in 2016) but with some Walmart store tie-in. Sucks that it doesn't have an SD card slot, but most budget eReaders don't. For $50, it seems to be a pretty solid deal. Resolution is meh but getting a front-lit e-ink display for this price is worth it if you plan on reading in bed and tossing it around.

it seems there is a Wal-Mart splash page, just like Amazon kindle. Wish it doesn't have the Wal-Mart splash page.

You can easily remove it with a text editor by modifying a line in the config file. Here's the details [mobileread.com].

Another nice thing about this model is that it has Pocket integration built in. Great way to read your saved articles without distraction.

Edit: It's possible to remove the Wal-Mart splash screen. Connect it to your computer, open .kobo\affiliate.conf, then change this:

Code:
affiliate=WalmartHybrid
to this:

Code:
affiliate=Kobo
