I was thinking of becoming a private investigator. This should provide clear recordings during interviews, which will come in handy when I perform a voice stress analysis afterwards. I shall not be deceived.

Are these actually better than using an app?

Yes, if you want great quality audio. If you're just dictating some notes, then an app is fine. If you want audio for videos, interviews, or want to record some music, this will sound better and can be used with even better microphones or as an audio interface to record directly on a computer.

This not for regular folks. Think videographers, or event runners (AV folks). It's also great for interviews, journalists etc.

Anywhere pro audio recording is needed - you'd use something like this. Tascam is the other company - also well known but Zoom is definitely top tier. This price is great for this unit - but make sure you need all the functionality this provides. There also have sub $100 recorders that record at the same quality- but lack some of the features like 4 track inputs etc.

Any idea if this can be an audio interface to an Android phone? I'd like a very portable battery powered setup that can support two headsets to conduct interviews while using the phone to live feed the audio out via Skype/Hangouts/whatever. All while providing local audio monitoring and being able to hear the audio coming back in from the Skype call.

.... It's not even in the same league. Especially considering you can plug XLR into this which means you're only limited by how bad your mic is

I have the non pro version of this and it's incredible. Mic, line in, xlr, guitar in. Guitar effects. Phantom power. 4 channel, 2 channel, 1 channel. Record to SD or use as a USB device plugged straight into your computer. Battery powered, AC powered or USB powered. I've had it for years. Highly recommend one of those fuzzy covers to replace the foam cover if you ever use it around wind.

Thanks, OP! In for one! I've been looking for a good deal on one of these for awhile.

I've been using a Zoom H1 for the past couple of years, and have been looking at the H4n for the 1/4 and XLR inputs. Plus, I just realized that it could be used as an audio interface, which really adds value to this.
