It should also be noted that this comes with a SATA SSD, not a PCIe NVMe SSD.

The NVMe drive is a 50 dollar upgrade.

May not be a deal breaker for some, but if I'm buying a new computer, I'm going with the most modern technology.
I wouldn't worry about this coming with a SATA SSD. since this has an optoin for NVME SSDe it problaby has two SSD slot. one 2.5" ssd or a m2.sata and a NVMe.m2 slot.

you can probably just pop a m2.nveme drive there

The same people that like HP are the same people who said Plasma TVs were better than LCD TVs and that HD DVDs and Betamax will dominate.

Plasma TV have certain advantages over LCD.
Deeper black. Higher contrast. Faster response time.

I bet you own a mac and iphone.

So, this is not the new new intel CPU, (which is Ice lake 10nm) This CPU (comet lake 14nm) is just a refresh of the old latest stuff...

I'm in the market for a new laptop. I'm holding out for an Ice Lake 10nm laptop with the Iris Plus technology as that seems to be the only thing making the Ice Lake series a better buy. Otherwise everyone will probably be fine with 8th gen i5-i7 stuff.

There are too many new intel CPUs designed to bamboozle the public. It seems like most of the hot deal laptops have horrendous screens (i just went to costco and the brightness and clarity was all over the place on every single model) I'm not going to buy anything without seeing it in person. (unless its a hot hot hot deal)

Intel is not honest about TDP. Which means the boost clock on this is practically irrelevant. You could probably run 4.9ghz.. For about 0.2 seconds before it hits thermal or TDP walls and throttles itself back down.
Ice Lake has some big problems too but at least then you'd get the improved iGPU. Main problem with Ice Lake is it can't scale to high frequencies. So even though it is a significant IPC increase, the clock rates drop so much that performance stays about even with 14nm+++++++++

This laptop is not a deal at all, you can do much better for $500 by going 8th gne or 9th Gen on CPU.

As others have pointed out this is Comet Lake, not Ice Lake. It's really just a refresh of Whiskey Lake, which was a refresh of Kaby Lake Refresh, which was a refresh of Kaby Lake, which was a refresh of Skylake.

Intel is claiming around 15% performance boost over Whiskey Lake, but when I ran Geekbench 4 on my Whiskey Lake HP Envy 13, I found that it only performed 2-3% slower than the same-model Envy 13 with Comet Lake in the Geekbench database.

So, don't fall for the "10th-gen" moniker. This is more like gen 8.5 at best.

And keep in mind this is the lowest in the HP consumer lineup, which goes from just HP brand with no other name, like this, to Pavilion, Envy, and Spectre. So build quality will be pretty mediocre, plastic all around. That and the lack of a IPS screen are deal-killers at this price.

Deeper black is the same as higher contrast, and NO plasma tvs did NOT have a faster response time.

The Plasma panel itself is faster to respond than LCD panels, but the whole system chain of video processing is the primary cause of latency, making plasma TVs as a whole end to end, no faster than LCD tvs of the time.

Today, the majority of LCD tvs can push image faster than older plasma.

I might consider taking it for $530 but never for $1299. Sorry, not worth it...
