This stuff is 5-10x the recommended dose of the US Institute of Medicine adequate recommendation of 400–800 IU for 97% of the population.

4000 IU is the safe upper limit, but very few people need that much: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17209171

For postmenopausal women with potential osteopenia or osteoporosis, the dosage is much higher. I live in FL with plenty of sunshine and my doc recommends 5,000 IU daily.
