The screen specs seem good for gaming, but I have a Q: if I wanted to use an external monitor, would I still be able to get 144 Hz if the external monitor supported it?

Correct - you'd only be limited by how powerful the GPU is. Meaning it's not going to be able to push 144 fps on all games unless you drop the graphics settings down a bit.
