Geez, it's a 144$ tablet. You're recommending iPad instead for $800. If they don't update it, buy another one in four years with the 650$ saved.

Well that's because there are so many manufacturers of Android tablets and only 1 manufacturer for iPad, that's why iPad updates are more consistent but still only limited for a certain number of years. If you buy a Pixel tablet, the amount of support you get will be similar to an iPad because you're getting it straight from Google.

As for your second point, if you get your custom ROMs and such from XDA, they're very reputable and you don't have to worry about viruses and stuff.

Bottom line is you have much more freedom with Android vs the highly-restricted iOS. Different products for different types of consumers.

I have one of these and it is a great looking tablet and works well. The biggest drawback, if you care, is that Samsung has stopped supporting updates. Some tablet owners received Android 8.0 Oreo, while older ones only updated to Android 7.0 Nougat. Here's a good list of version and breakdown https://thechipped.com/will-samsu...eo-update/

idk what ppl r talking about when talking longetivity. ive tons of samsung tabs in my household as old as from 2013 and they just wont die and yes no updates but they are used daily, heavily and no signs of slowdown.

also have one of these and it is a thin, sleek device. my dad enjoys it a lot.

I've got 2 Samsung Tab Pro 8.4" from 2014 I've been thinking about handing down to the kids since their tablets have either died or are about to give up the ghost. I don't need anything fancy, just a tablet to do web browsing, some media watching, and book reading on. Between this and a brand new Tab A 8" from Costco for ~$140, which would be the recommended route?

Have they fixed the battery drain issue? Decided on Resurrection Remix with Android 8.1 because of that.
