I have used this game and duolingo and I have found the latter to work best for me, especially to build vocabulary and to be able to hold a simple conversation. Duolingo free edition is perfectly fine, ads are never intrusive can be clicked away after a few seconds. I travel to Japan a couple of times a year.

I guess for $4, you could do worse.
There's also youtube classes that you can watch, and take notes.
It really helps to have some workbooks, and also write down every word and their english meaning, or Japanese definition, in tiny writting, close together, in a notebook. If you can fit 200+ words on a page... Basically you want to have as much on several pages, and then post them to your wall, and go over everything an hour per day.

I wish there was a country where everyone looked like anime characters. I would learn that language for sure. 😂

This is more for the written language. Will help some, but not really something that focuses on teaching verbal.
