You'll get mixed answers on this, especially if you visit the BuyItForLife sub on reddit. The Chaco sub is, of course, from a lot of folks with a hard-on for Chaco, though there are some folks over there who are capable of objectivity.

Anyway, I used to be one of those people who loved Chaco. I have backpacked 100+ miles (single trip) in a pair of original Z/1 (as in the early Colorado-made sandals) and thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. The Vibram soles were phenomenal and I (personally) found them very comfortable (though quite heavy compared to trail runners or something like Bedrock Cairn sandals). I still have my original Colorado sandals, 15+ years later.

Quality has gone down significantly since Wolverine bought them and took over in...2013? The warranty kinda sucks, too, in that they won't cover a lot of things they used to (but will gladly charge you as much or more than a new pair on sale will cost to re-sole or re-strap them). Unless you go with customs ($130+), you're getting shoes from China with poor QC and quality/durability that is a shadow of the original Chacos. Even the Customs are less supportive and comfortable than the originals.

At $45, they're good shoes. Anything nearing retail price is a complete and utter waste, IMO.

Also, toe-loops suck. I have never met anyone IRL who liked them. Obviously some people do, though.

Regarding Cloud footbed: not a fan.

If you're looking at these for hiking or backpacking, I'd also strongly suggest looking at the aforementioned Bedrock Cairn sandals. They'll most likely appeal to those already in - or considering joining - the Cult of Minimalist Shoes, but for good reason! Take my opinion with a grain of salt - as I am a happy member of said cult - but I'd pick the Cairns over Chaco anything (including my originals).

The soles on the Z1 classics are very stiff. FYI. I ended up returning my Z1 Classics for a Z Cloud.

This is my experience too. I used to wear the classics, but switched to the z cloud with my last pair. I highly recommend the z cloud over the original. I have heard they may wear out faster, but I suspect part of that is you will want to wear them more.

Good morning everyone Smilie Please try the link(s) again; as there appears to have been an issue that should now be resolved. If you thumbed down or voted 'Unable to replicate deal' or 'Incorrect Information' based on this, please reconsider changing your vote if you are able to replicate it now; as this was my fault while Front Paging and not that of the OP (TattyBear). Sincerest apologies. The deal is still very much active and the problem was simply attributed to a link issue on my end. Thanks!
