Looks like this set is at an all-time low, according to CamelCamelCamel. If you're new or returning to Dungeons and Dragons this is a great basic set including simplified rules, character sheets, dice, and a Dungeon Master board. Think of it like a "Starter Set Plus."

There is a solid review of this kit here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdNc-mpWYZ8

Good luck, adventurers.

Looks great. Be aware - this doesn't include the players handbook, but it might include the basic rules to get you started. It apparently includes a 50% off coupon for the digital players handbook, so that's nice.

Looks like there is another one D&D Starter Set for $11.99

Looks same but different adventure? I could be wrong.

You're right, The starter Set has Lost Mines of Phandelver and the Essentials set has Dragon of Icespire Peak. I think the rule book they have in common is mostly the same. The Essentials set might be slightly more updated. I have both but haven't compared them.

One of the persons reviews compares the two products.

The new set is more updated. It also comes with a coupon for DnDBeyond PHB, along with free DL coupon for the adventure contained inside it. It also comes with free DL rights to the 3 follow up adventures that essentially make the new Essentials Box a full campaign up to probably level 15. It also has the basic rules and stat sheets for all the monsters you'll encounter in the adventure

The original (green) starter set has the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure, which is probably a bit better than the one included in this blue starter box.

Note the Blue box doe NOT have pregen characters, but does have a lot of great perforated heavy-stock cards to hand out that help the game quite a bit: initiative, conditions, magic items etc.

This was much cheaper recently and still disappointing. The stuff is flimsy junk
I think you're thinking of the Starter Se. This set just came out a few months ago and I haven't seen it cheaper. Owning both this and the Starter Set, I can say that the quality in this set is much higher. The covers of the books are a bit stiffer, it contains more dice, and has some (low quality) cards to work as helpful player aids.

How difficult is this, really? Also is it playable with only 3 people? I've always wanted to try to learn hut my friends are drunken idiots who will give up the moment it's confusing.

The rules in the Starter and Essentials set are as simple as you can make "make believe group storytelling with tactical combat." The Essentials kit is an easier starting point than the "Starter" kit, as the included cards and DM screen require less flipping through books to figure out spells, combat order, etc.. so the cadence of the game is better/faster.

You also get a nice full color map and 11 pc dice set vs the typical 6 pc dice kit included with the Stranger Things and "Starter" boxed sets.

This is absolutely the best "start here" resource if you are looking to get into D&D, but if you see the Stranger Things or "Starter" kit for less than $10 I'd pick them up just for the adventures plus some extra dice and some goofy minis as well.

If you don't have anything yet, this is a fantastic deal. To get the Players Handbook on D&D Beyond pays for itself.
