Windows Defender is free and better than this.

AV softwares are only limited known viruses and won't save you from new exploits. Every year the ratings on "big brand name Anti-virus softwares(av)" changes because of it's detection ability or how fast/efficient it is, and etc.
If you want to see the ratings and etc, you can go to numerous sources but here's is one:
https://www.av-test.org/en/
Ranking on these sites and from organizations may vary every year, but in truth all big name brands pretty much perform the same in detection and etc.
I know some people swear by certain 'brand' of AV software.
I used to highly recommend AVG and Kaspersky looong time ago..
Of course I have used AVG, Avira, Avast, Norton, McAfee, Trendnet, Kaspersky before. The last one that I used was actually AVG ultimate 2016 just because it was free after rebate.
I ended up uninstalling it after using it several months due to unnecessary crap that it installs automatically.
What is important for people like me, is whether the software has other bloatware or heavy PC resources usage.
Norton and McAfee used to be notorious for slowing down a PC.
Many people say Microsoft Defender is inadequate and vulnerable but even Microsoft Defender was top ranked by av-test.org before.
M.Defender is simple and does well enough for me that I don't use anything else.
If you visit many shady sites and torrent much, AVG may offer a bit better coverage, but remember that most important thing is how the user uses the computer.

Does anyone know if this includes the driver updating program? Or give you access to it? From what I can tell , it does not. Thanks OP!

I'm so tired of avast hijacking my default browser and opening their own browser on start up, that I may just give this a try.

If someone uses malwarebytes premium and regularly updated windows defender, are programs like avast and avg truly necessary? Or are they more of a peace of mind purchase?

This is true, i loved avg in it's first years, it was a very minimal, fast and efficient anti virus, then they started coming out with other programs to improve pc and that's when it started going down the drain. I might be wrong but i believe they got bought out and so it's now more or less filled with unnecessary programs.
