I totally agree... pens are a bit like knives, where they are made is part of the allure of an expensive pen (expensive vs Walmart pens, not a Montblanc for ex).

Why is it the German manufacturers like Montblanc continue to make their pens in higher cost Germany... but everyone still wants them, yet American companies like Cross trade off their good name, but HIDE the fact that 95% of their pens are made in China? Where a pen is made is a big deal, if it's a statement piece.

Lastly, Waterman pens, a NY family owner co that is now owned by Newell Brands - but they still make most all of their pens and pencils in France. You can get them on Amazon (just watch the price, it moves a lot).

My two pennies.

They're not what they used to be. If you like writing, you may enjoy an old original us-made one off eBay

I'm not really sure how that would change much, you would still be using modern cartridges after the original is empty. Making the pen write the same. Unless you literally just mean that the older cases feel better, but that's all up to personal preference, I like the new cross cases.

Definitely not the case for me. I got a pen from my old boss, was given to her by Simpson Thatcher. Not sure where exactly they got it from or what kind it is, but that was the first time a pen made me want to write more. It was perfectly balanced and writes smoothly. If i can get more pen like that, I wouldn't care where it came from. I tried to buy some American made pens to see if I get the same feeling, and it didn't even come close. It was just a Parker though.

Totally not worth it. Pentel gel pens writes so much better. This is more like wearing a watch. You don't really need one,but it is nice to have.

All the Cross refills are also made in China. Used to be Cross pens had a lifetime warranty but now there is a charge to fix or replace. My Fisher astronaut pen of 30 years developed a split in the barrel, contacted them and sent it in, received a brand new one with a not thanking me and an extra refill for sending it in. Read that Cross still supplies our Presidents with pens but with ones made in USA. Fisher is still made here.

Yeah, that is a bummer they tack on that warranty fee. Just sent a 70's pen back the other day. $10 + my shipping cost to get it there. Of course, bought it at a garage sale for $1, so it will still work out.

One thing to note, if you live in California, I believe the form auto-updates to a no cost repair due to state laws.

What have we come to? These come in a box now, instead of a case?

I don't buy the whole "made in U.S." part because only three countries on this planet are capable of producing good quality ballpoint tips, and USA is not on that list.

Germany, France, and Japan only, really? How about Switzerland, the UK, South Korea... and it's unfair to say the United States isn't a world class manufacturer.

That's part of my point, though... people like the origin of luxury brands to be in one place. Can you imagine a Rolex made in Japan, a Wusthoff knife made in China or India, a Snapon ratchet made in Taiwan, or a Louis Vuitton made in anywhere but France?

I felt the same way about Levi's Jeans... now being made in Mexico, for ex. Sure, styles change and simply being made in America is not enough, but when the Berlin Wall fell, one of the first thing East Berliners wanted were American made Levi's Jeans. I doubt Mexican made Levi's Jean's would have the same allure. So, yeah, Cross can keep their Chinese made ballpoint pens...
