B&H Photo Video has WD 3TB Elements Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive [bhphotovideo.com] for $69.19 + FS. Note, expected to ship within 7-10 days

I have had this drive for a couple of weeks and like it. Very quiet. Amazon [amazon.com] had it for this price for a few days but went out of stock I think early yesterday. Amazon shows 4,349 customer reviews and 4.3 out of 5 stars (5 star 75%; 4 star 8%; 3 star 3%; 2 star 2%; 1 star 13%).

According to ccc, lowest price was $64.99 on Nov 22, 2018. Hard drives may go on sale again in a couple of months (Black Friday). Outside of BF, this is the lowest price.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

instant frontpage
EDIT: actually instant top of "popular"...which displays on the front page. this distinction was pointed out below.

good price, but this is either wildly popular or getting an artificial bump. we need to make voting public so can gauge authenticity of votes.
may warrant popularity, but the instant voting patterns are not naturally explicable.
(NOTE: Initial deal was just the B&H seller, which seems to get more suspect voting than Sold by Amazon deals)

Hi sarcasmogratis Smilie Just wished to give a heads up that this deal is not currently on the Front Page. Here is a link to the Front Page: https://slickdeals.net

This is currently in the "Popular Deals" section, which is different from a Front Page deal. Here is a link to the Popular Deals tab: https://slickdeals.net/deals

Actual Front Page deals will have a write-up just below the OP in the post #2 spot by a Deal Editor (this thread currently does not). Popular Deal threads do not have this because they have not been Front Paged by a Deal Editor. Here are a few links to examples of deals that are currently on the Front Page. Hope this helps Smilie

No USB C no TU!
its not just about USB its about speeds which USB C supports. FYI these WD 3.0 ports are prone to damage, I got few myself in the past and if you check amazon review pics its also mentioned there as well.

Apologies, not official "Front Page".

Pretty sure everyone's main home page (ie Slickdeals.net) shows "Popular Deals" in the right column at least on desktop website, right?
I'm aware of how "personalized" front page works, that's not what I was referring to.

Thanks for clearing up my generalization/misnomer as to exactly WHERE this deal was rapidly promoted to.
I'll try to remember to label "main page" or "popular" rather than the official SD designation of "Front Page" to avoid confusion when pointing out posts with possible vote manipulation.

Can you comment on whether voting can be made public to mitigate the need to be suspicious of these rapidly upvoted deals? I feel our efforts would be better spent on that rather than the pedantic "front page" designation.

Thanks for your reply Smilie I was simply hoping to offer some help when I happened across your post by chance here yesterday requesting insight from SD was all. As you've been a member of SD since 2007 - longer than even myself - and had a number of Front Page deals posted here yourself (example), I just wanted to rule out that user setting when I noticed you mention multiple times that "Popular Deals" threads were "promoted" to the Front Page with really low thumb counts and/or comments. It confused me, since the ones you commented in weren't on the FP either at all or at least weren't yet at the timestamp you were mentioning they were.

Since you appear to be posting from SD mobile app, that interface uses a more condensed layout than the website. In the app, actual Front Page deals are in the center column (those are threads Deal Editors have Front Paged). Popular Deals are on the right column when you swipe right (as I'm sure you're familiar); but Popular Deals =/= Front Page deals.

Moving past that as requested, there is no set rule on how fast or slow members are allowed to vote on any thread they may think is a good or bad deal (it can go the other way as well, and a deal can be rapidly downvoted). Given we have millions of users on this site, it's not out of the realm of possibility that at least six totally legit members of the many people who spotted this thread at the time it was posted could have voted it up/down. However, if any thread gains votes quickly, rest assured that if Mods detect anything that looks off (i.e. shilling, artificial boosting), we will and do catch and deal with such instances accordingly (up to and including banning offenders). Just because forum moderation isn't privy to general users' eyes, doesn't mean it isn't happening Smilie If I sit here and type up the how/when/why methods used for just anyone on the internet to see, then that gives any potential offenders the means to try to figure out a way to circumvent the system Wink (so, I can't and won't). Also remember - it could go either way (supposed thread "boosting" or "suppression"): Slickdeals has competitors.

There was a time when all voting used to be visible by everyone (you may remember this). The issue that developed over time was that much more often than desired it could allow some members to use this info against one another. Example: One person shares their opinion on a deal another disagrees with and notices they thumbed up/down the thread. They might insist the other is shilling for/trolling against that brand/product/type of deal; even when/if they weren't (then they start Mod Alerting/reporting everything the other says and does, it becomes a mess - for us and everyone reading). "I see you've downvoted this Amazon/Apple deal and strongly recommended Walmart/Samsung instead, you must work for/be a shill for Walmart/Samsung". This results in even more arguments we'd eventually be forced to step in and mediate once things got heated and threads derailed. In other instances, an OP could see who voted on deals they posted and "call out" other users (by name) for thumbing down a thread. This could result in members seeking each other out on the forums and via personal messages, causing all types of harassment that again, resulted in even more conflicts between some members that would necessitate intervention/moderation.

These are only two examples that can and did happen; and there's much more that goes into running a forum this large that I'm not sure everyone can be expected to realize. If we tried to adopt a system like eBay uses for customer feedback ("masking" the user ID, like R****e for RevOne for example), it still wouldn't be hard to figure out some usernames regardless (especially if they both voted and commented). Not to mention if we're masking them anway, might as well go all the way and not show them at all. Even when it was completely visible, there would be a few folks here and there that still made comments they didnt trust the whole voting thing regardless, so hanged if you do, hanged if you don't. I hope I've helped in some capacity to answer your questions. However, I really do hate to make this thread about these issues (apologies to the OP - slicked007 Frown ), when we have a dedicated subforum for discussing site suggestions here. If we can please leave this topic for those interested in discussing this particular deal whether they think the deal is good or not (you even mentioned thinking the price was good), please feel free to let us know of any thoughts/suggestions in the SIS subforum. Thanks Smilie (sorry about the wall of text, much to cover)

USB-C is rated from 3-10 Gbps, and is much faster than your typical USB port.

To my knoledge, a small low rpm HDD cannot saturate USB 3 bandwidth.... But none the less, USB C would be awesome.
