Before clicking to buy you should google a comparison between this AT-LP120X USB and the still available older model the AT-LP120 USB.

It appears the new model is a bit of a down downgrade in features and quality in order to hit a lower suggested price point. Less powerful motor, removal of the ballast weight that reduced resonances, elimination of the Vertical tracking angle adjustment, and a few other differences. The light is no longer pop-up. They have a new AT-LP140X that brings those features (and more) back.

The AT-LP120 model is still available.... today for $196 shipped from Beach Camera orBuydig through [rakuten.com] Rakuten if you use their SAVE15 code.

I agree there are some features you are losing, but I did a bunch of research on the differences and this should sound better for home use. The motor is much quieter and the preamp is greatly improved. The preamp is a big weakness of the older version.

Where did you research? The only comparisons I see are on turntablelab (which seems to have been written by an incorrectly programmed bot) and one by Jeff Puckett at Discogs, whose article was written "In Partnership with Audio Technica". Puckett says the preamp is great...but does not have the original there to compare it to.

If the motor is quieter it should reduce rumble, but AT provides no specifications for that and the S/N ratio is the same. The torque is certainly lower on the new one, as is the weight (which will impact actual S/N ratio in many homes). The inability to adjust Vertical Tracking Angle is equally as important at home as in a disco.

I do not think this is a bad deal. But, I think the combination of a reduced closeout price on the in certainly more expensively built AT-LP120 plus the 15% off is a better choice, at least until there are some actual measurements done that show AT made something more cheaply that is actually better on the new model.

I completely agree the weight is lower which is worse. I think VTA is overkill on a turntable in this price range and most people should stick with styluses in the AT line. Also, I don't personally see a benefit from a higher torque motor unless you are a DJ. The removable pop up light is also not a huge concern for me since I will not use it.

On the positives. This has a lower profile and the newer AT-VM95 cartridge, Also, the upgraded pre-amp and the power is now outside of the turntable body. I wanted the new cartridge which is $50 alone. Anyways, each to their own. I just think this is good for me.
