I saw this answered, but I'll expand a bit. The sound stage referred to the perceived "space" the sound of the music occupies. Imagine a line between your right and left ear. A single instrument or voice may sound like it's in the center or closer to your right or left ear along the line. A single voice or instrument can also sound big (takes up most the line) and crowds others on the line, or small with space between each instrument or voice. Open back headphones tend to make the "line" longer and the line may extend past your ears.
As you work your way up and buy higher quality equipment the line can turn more two dimensional or even 3 dimensional where sounds appear to be more in front or behind you or even above or below you. When people refer to sound stage they are generally referring to how big this space is which is generally larger with open back headphones. The space is the canvas in which the music is painted. Does a larger soundstage mean the music is always big? I would argue, no, It just gives the audio engineer a little canvas to work with.

I have the EL-8 in closed back. Wished it was open. But they look heavy and well, they are compared to Bose. But, it's actually feels very good. I had thought they'd be lopsided or top heavy just judging comparatively with "plastic" headphones. I have quite a few Audeze, Focal, Sennheiser, etc. My absolute favorite is the LCD-2. Yes, the cushions are large. But honestly, the feel is beyond compare with anything else. I went Grado to start my trip away from Best Buy-sourced headphones (sorry to sound snooty). Grado open back in the SR80e blew me away. I could NOT believe the difference in audio perception. Then moved up the line in Grado. And it was all open-back since with the exception of the EL-8. Absolutely the most comfortable headphones I've ever had or currently own (a lot). I hope this helps. It's a good bit of change to throw down, but I really don't think you'll be disappointed. Oh, and no, it's not meant for a quiet office. That's true. But it's not nearly as loud for them as for you, which is what my closed-back EL-8s are for. Whew. Didn't mean to write a book. These Audeze have changed how much I listen to music and how much I enjoy it. No, I don't work for the company. Smilie I'm a convert.

These are my favorite headphone ever. Very comfortable and the sound is amazing. I love open back headphones though.

Audeze support was amazing also. They replaced my old El-8 after they broke.

Looks like they are liquidating EL-8 range. So, mostly you get a new ones. Grab while you can.

They are a little heavy, but extremely comfortable . I wore them about 8 hours a day.

I'd say so. In tandem with the Audeze Reveal VST plugin, you'll be able to use these for mixing and mastering, if you so choose.
